Turkeys Join The Animal Revolution

This is very interesting as I have quite a few wild turkeys that frequent my place. I have seen as many as 10 or 12 at a time. Sometimes they are doing their mating ritual. Sometimes they have their babies with them. They tend to congregate near my barn, under a rather large oak tree. They appear to be foraging for the acorns that drop. The spot that they like is about 200 yards or so behind my house. They are extremely vigilant and have really good eyesight. If I just open my back door (very slowly and quietly) they leave immediately. It is funny to see them run. And, when they fly through the woods, they literally fly THROUGH the woods. Crashing into everything. It is hard to imagine that "wild" turkeys would be so bold as to attack people or even hang around a populated area. I suspect that they are not truly "wild". Other than they are not of the domesticated, farm variety.

We used to run into them now & then @ our Big Sur property, never aggressive, no attacks, not even hint of such. And yes, when we apprached, they scattered, but IIRC only "trotted" in opposite direction, never took to flight. I do recall one peculiar incident: Was driving up the access road to the high campground we'd built and outta nowhere, in broad (California) daylight, there's a very tall "tom" right in front of me, on the road, trotting on up @ the same direction I was headed. So I slowed to his speed and followed him on up until he veered off to the brush and I continued on. Same thing happened but with a "fawn stage" Mule deer, 'cept this time I was jogging up the access road; lil' fawn kept "joggin" as well, in the same direction, even slow enough to allow me to pass her/him. Weird **** went down @ that Central Coast. Note this spread was situated just up the hillside from the point @ the Pacific @ which, local and other legend has it, Kerouac threw his pen into the ocean, vowing to never write again. Not improbable: The adjacent spread was (is?) owned by the family of Lawrence Ferlinghetti, where Kerouac was known to "repair" during bouts of depression, long & wasted benders, etc.

Toms River's not a location know for turkey, but the have deer (seen them at the water plant many times).

Up here in West Milford, we got turkey (cool), deer (dumb as hell, but yummy), chipmunk (cute), snakes (garden ones - cute), fox (cute. Also a brand of motocross gear), and bear (not cute).

I have a 12 gauge that’ll solve that problem. “But Judge, I feared for my safety.”

Too much Wild Turkey and they suddenly turned into a roving gang of mean @ss drunks on a rampage ???
I dunno that's the best I could come up with folks LOL...

It's New Jersey. Just saying the word 'gun' is a crime.

Everyone who hunts out here uses a bow. Toms River, nobody has enough land to do that...

Just to be clear, there is a bow season for deer hunting in NJ, but deer, turkeys, black bear, ducks, etc. can also be hunted with guns in season. Fall turkey season is over, so have to wait for the spring season.

I have personal experience with wild turkeys being aggressive towards humans. One wouldn't let my daughter out of her car until my wife exited the house with a broom and he ran. Another time one chased their car out the driveway and part way down the street.
They can get really crazy stupid during the mating season.
