Turntable Placement?

I was wondering about placing a turntable on top of a receiver. I've read that it is not a good idea. Yet I've seen images (some here at AK) of turntables placed on receivers.

Opinions?

Not ideal, but I do it because I'm out of space with two complete systems in one spot.

What are the hazards, if any? Can damage occur (to either the receiver or turntable)?

It's not really a dangerous situation, although it's certainly best for receivers to have plenty of ventilation space. My turntable is on a board that's 2 inches above the receiver. The receiver has ventilation on the sides in addition to the top and I don't crank it up or drive difficult speakers, so I'm not worried about it. The turntable isn't harmed by such things, but sheetmetal isn't optimum footing for them.
