Tweeter Repair?

I have an EPI 100 tweeter that plays but at very low volumes compared to the other. I swapped another EPi 100 tweeter in and it played normal. Are these repairable?

Not really. :tears:

From what I've read, they used ferrofluid in the VC gap, and when it starts to dry out, the output goes with it. It turns into a sludge, and limits the VC travel, hence the low output.

I know you don't want to hear this, but once this happens, the tweeter is toast. Too bad, as they are really nice tweets. Hue @ Human (http://www.humanspeakers.com/index.htm) sells new replacements. He might even be able to rebuild yours, but I'm not sure on that point. Give him a call and ask. If he can rebuild, do both so they match in output. Also, if you haven't, change out the cap. It makes a difference. :thmbsp:

BTW, which model box and tweeter do you have? Red ring, Gold ring, Masonite? I do see them on e-Bay from time to time. It might be worthwhile to do a search.

If you go with replacements, I'd replace both. If one went bad, maybe the other isn't far behind. My 2 cents.

I'm a BIG EPI fan. 2 sets of 100's, a set of 2.0's, a set of A120's, and spare parts, just in case. :D

Good Luck. Keep us posted.

Just buy a replacement.

Join AK as a Subscriber so you have access to BarterTown as EPI tweets do come up with a fair degree of regularity.

Alternatively there is the 'bay.

I guess your local CL for a donor unit or the part is also possible.

Rebuilds even if possible would not be economic. You can replace with a used part for $10 to $20 and as mentioned in an earlier posting there is always humanspeakers.

I have the gold ring. I had a spare that I had bought so my speakers are working fine. I will check with Human on replacements.

Human lists that they can rebuild Gold Ring Tweeters for $67. No affiliation.

I couldn't find anywhere on the site that says they sell them, but I may have just missed it.
