Twisted After-school Kid's Show we used to have.

Every Saturday morning our area in Northeast Ohio was blessed with the Soupy Sales show.
Now that was a twisted "kids" show! Kids of 17+ years or so maybe. If I repeated that joke that got Soupy Sales thrown off the air I would probably be banned here too! Want to hear it? :D

Now in more recent years, Barney and Friends is some really scary mind-numbing, mind altering crap. Park your kids in front of the TeeVee and watch their heads turn to mush! :thumbsdn:

Didn't Soupy tell his "Kiddies" to go to their daddies' wallets, take out all the green printed pieces of paper, & mail 'em to him ?!? H.R. Puffnstuff, back in my day-actually a year or 2 AFTER I'd given up on cartoons-was kinda bizarre... There was one back in 1970-71 called "Tomfoolery" that came on right at lunchtime on Saturdays that was REAL "Off The Wall", it featured the doggerel of Edward Lear & Lewis Carroll, it was too cerebral & "Out There" for most kids to relate to. Plus, it often got pre-empted by Phootbawl-WAY more important than the 2 or 3 weird kids it might have reached...

Growing up in Dallas-Fort Worth we had "Slam Bang Theater" with "Icky Twerp" on Ch 11, from 1955-1972. A distant second for me was "Mr. Peppermint" on Ch 8. Slam Bang Theater showed Three Stooges with original skits in between.

This is why I am the way I am.

Watched Ghoulardi everyday after school blowing up frogs with firecrackers how politically incorrect that was but not in the sixties

We had an american import in the uk in the 70's called "wait til your father gets home" which looking back was like an intelligent fore runner of the simpsons, i loved it !

Lunch with Soupy Sales was our favorite. My mom would prepare the daily lunch menu recommended by Soupy. We would eat it all and enjoy his crazy show with White Fang, Black Tooth, Pookie, Hippie, and of course plenty of pie throwing :yippy:

Soupy Sales was one weird ****ing show, I remember that well. What were they thinking? It sucked.

Soupy started his kid's show in Detroit at WXYZ in the 1950s. He also had a late night variety show and would feature jazz musicians who were in town playing in the jazz clubs, ie. Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie. Incredible but true.

Music was always important to Soupy. His two sons (Hunt and Tony Sales) inherited his love and eventually ended up playing with David Bowie in Tin Machine.

strangest kids show I have ever seen would have to be "teletubbies" how much LSD did these guys consume?

Connecting two of the aforementioned : John Zacherle and Soupy Sales (previously Milton Suprax, IIRC) were, apparently, long-time friends.
They'd appeared together a few times at the Chiller Theatre Con in NJ.
Soupy had suffered a stroke and was in frail health, but was in great humor when I'd last seen him in, again, memory being what it is, 2008.

Soupy Sales is showing as old early '70s reruns on "Retro TV" on Saturday afternoons at 6 PM-5 Central. We get that on one of the low-powered OTA channels 31.4.

And yes "Teletubbies"is one bizarre program. Just think... in 30-40 years people will be reminiscing about THAT!

I grew up in Cleveland in the 60's and 70's. The first one I remember was Ghoulardi on channel 8, WJW, on Friday nights. When he left, Big Chuck and Hoolihan took over. They did a lot with Pollock jokes that would never fly today. Hoolihan left and Little John stepped in. He came to my Jr. High in Eastlake for an afternoon. Pretty cool. Of course, the Ghoul came on either Friday or Saturday nights on channel 61. On Saturday afternoons we had Superhost on channel 43, WUAB.
Anyone from Cleveland remember Captain Penny????

Sure do! Captain Penny's noontime show introduced me to "The Little Rascals". Ghoulardi (who was on a competing Cleveland channel) never thought much of the Captain and was once famously quoted as saying: "Captain Penny!!?? I wouldn't give you a nickel for him!"

regards,

PS. There's a wonderful little book called: "Cleveland TV Memories" by Tom Terran and R.D.Heidenfels that I highly recommend.

In Houston we had a local show 'Miss Kitterick'. She wore a black cat suit and interacted with kids on a live set. For cartoons there was Clutch Cargo with these weird lips. But the proverbial freak show was Davey and Goliath...yikes!
