Unique & Distinctive Speakers

When you absolutely must take your speakers with you, and you want to make an impact wherever you go, and you want to be able to go anywhere...

Yeah, I have that all the time!

So where can I get me a pair of these "bass dumpsters"? Might come in handy for your average rouge outdoor Covid party's as well..

Those put me in the mind, of thinking about these- the Acora SRB:

Made of granite. That little speaker is 55lbs!

They are quite expensive ($15K a pair), but they are absolutely astoundingly good. That little speaker shouldn't be able to do what it does, by all usual rationale.

Gordon.

I wonder how that sub works?
It’s a rotary subwoofer. Uses a couple of lightweight polystyrene carbon fiber vanes that rotate back/forth in that housing. It’s 12” in diameter and has the output of three conventional 12” woofers. I still have the September/October 1996 Car Stereo Review test report.

Speakers made of cement are very prone to chipping — the corners are specially vulnerable, then the sharp edges. I had two sets, from different m'frs, and both chipped. But they do their assigned task: totally inert acoustically.

I imagine that concrete can be mixed with some additives (such as a plasticizer) to lessen brittleness and chipping, but one never knows if the speaker company thought of this when they spec'd the cab. I have not tried them, but I can imagine the acoustic inertness to be a strong point for speaker designers like yourself. I have some old Infinity SM-122 studio monitor towers that have awfully thin cabinet wall structures (i.e., they do not pass the cab knuckle test), I wonder if the designers took this into consideration when they designed them as they sound fine (or maybe it was simply cost cutting). They are not even close structurally to my older Infinity Quantum 4 towers with thick wood with strategic bracing added. Anyway, while we are on the subject of concrete speakers...

According to an article in the UK mag HiFiNews circa 1990, Stevie Wonder and Elton John both used concrete speakers as their studio monitors — made by, if I recall, QLM. I had a pair and they were incredibly neutral, but needed a lot more power than the little NAD 3020 I was using.

Green Mountain Audio drivers are mounted in reformuated marble poured into molds and then either sprayed black or wrapped in wood to help with the WAF factor.
I can't find any naked pictures of them.
