Unity Horns

I can't really remember the details. I'd just figure a few watts dissipation in the wire at half-voltage or so input. They usually rate it in ohms/m or ohms/ft.

From what I can find, a reasonable size wire is about 0.8 ohms/ft, so you'd need a much lower voltage secondary filament. For say, a foot long of cutting wire, you'd need about 2Vrms. A 6.3V/6A filament transformer with a variac would be adequate, and allow you to crank it hotter if need be, or allow thinner wire if you changed to that (higher resistance).
 
One is up and running. getting a little bit of a high pitched buzz from the crossover, but it only comes through in between tracks when there is no music or if someone is just talking during a track. I just tossed in some approximate settings and levels and it seems pretty ok. A quick measurement from my iphone shows +3/-4dB from 600hz up without any tweaking.

Might be a loop/supply issue. I'd wager if you stuck some THAT bal/unbal-unbal/bal converters on there (since all the inputs and outputs on the XM are balanced), it'd clean things up.

Just found this thread and its a good one for me, as the I've been using Yorkville Unitys for a while now and its great to find others that are using them or considering using them.

I pulled the passive crossover components from the inside of mine and am now running them fully active with crossover duty provided by a DEQX. I'm using an F3 clone for the tweeters, a UCD180 for the midrange drivers and 1000ASP ICE amps for the woofers. Its the best sound I've ever had and the dynamics are incredible. I used to own Oris 150 horns and don't miss them at all with my current setup.

I used the DEQX to measure the response of the drivers and then correct them with 96db slopes at 300hz and 1250hz.

My crossover/eq modules had some noise issues that I haven't been able to diagnose yet but with a generic behringer at the fest, we were able to get a taste of the potential. I heard the U215 quite some time back, and was impressed by their potential. Very unlike any other PA speakers I'd heard. :)

Absolutely! I think there is real potential for these in domestic situations...assuming you can get over the appearance (which I don't think is TOO bad, but my wife disagrees!).

I'm busy playing with amplification now, but would really like to build foam plugs, a la Geddes' speakers. Has anyone found a source for really thick 30ppi foam, or is gluing layers together the only solution?

I know of 2" thick foam but gluing them together is not an option, if you can closely mimic the profile of the horn, you should be able to get away with just gluing at the edges.

Excellent thread Dave, Sounds like a better than horn, horn. Now I have some idea of all it has taken you to get these beauties to the Fest. Is there a way I could hear where your at with these? I'm still down with the horn fever and the TAD based Classic Audio T-3's are just too damn expensive unless I win our lottery...

Hi Rob!

The horns are complete outside of cosmetic touches. The crossover is still in development and i suspect after this weekend, i'll make some serious progress on them. I have a 2-4khz bump in the response that is making them a little forward sounding, but once that is worked out, I'll be sitting pretty good, I think.

At that point, I start the process of trying to make them look pretty with some sort of nice veneer on the outside.
