Unity Horns

I am considering adding a strap and making them into headphones. A quick test makes me think they will fit just right.

That'll be a pretty nice set up from I can tell. Are you confident that you've made sufficient allowances for headroom? It really wouldn't do to starve the drivers.

Unity number 2 has made some fantastic progress today. A little extra bondo and sanding the first time around made it look just about good enough that only some minor filling and sanding will be necessary when the first coat of primer dries.

Terry, at the fest, the likely setup will be a Sima amp for the bass, and SE KT88 amps for the mids and highs. Possibly the 150.00 amp prototype for the highs, as well.

The original plan was 200w x 6 IcePower amp to power everything, and in the summer months, it might make sense to go that route, still.

Eventually, I suspect the Bogen will be replaced by a 6C33C push pull amp that i've had in the works for a few years now. I've got some giant Plitron output transformers set aside along with big plitron power transformers and some other iron that will be too difficult to move around when they are done. :)

Newman, I will have a 200wpc 50+ Lb PA amp that I am getting at the fest, we can hook that up to the lambdas and make them sing. :D
 
I'm probably not going to be doing much amp swapping since I'll have to adjust gains at the crossover each time, which requires a PC to be hooked up to the speaker controller.
 
I forgot to mention (or maybe I did mention earlier in the thread) that I am going to attempt to make a Geddes' style reticulated foam phase plug to fill the horn up to the point where it transitions from 60 to 90 degrees. Just need to track down some wire appropriate to use as a cutter in a DIY hot wire cutter.

I built a foam-cutter once. Google Nichrome for the cutting wire. I used a standard AC dimmer and a filament transformer for step-down to control the heat.
 
Dave, those look really good. How are your bass bins coming? Can't wait to see the finished results. Are you doing the X-something crossovers? I assume that is why you need the computer to control it. Do you have to cross the 4 mid drivers to the CD?

I'll check it out, any particular size you recommend? I have a variac I can use, along with a 25v 2A ratshack transformer.

Steep crossover from the lambda to the mids, shallow crossover at 1200 hz (or so) from the mids to tweeters.

Earl Geddes has stated that "Higher Order Modes" or HOMs are the cause of the horn "sound" that so many people dislike. HOMs are early reflections within the horn itself. The existence of the reticulated foam resuces the reflections, smoothing out the response. He uses 30 pores per inch reticulated foam.

So it basically forces the high frequencies to move out of the horn rather than around it then out.
 
I think what it does more than anything is form an acoustic low pass filter, knocking out the annoying reflections.

I started to cut my foam blocks today. I managed to snap the wire on my home made hot wire cutter almost immediately. I'll probably be foamless at the fest unless I just make a few strips to place in various locations inside the horn.
 
I will go to the AK Fest for no other reason than to see and listen to these unity horns. This is inspiring work, nice job!
