Unofficial Monitor Audio Owner Thread

I have a pair of the gold 200's. They are the mains in my HT setup but I also run them with emotiva 2 channels system. The emotiva pre amp has HT bypass which allows me to run in both systems. They are very clean sounding speakers that I like alot. I have been thinking of trying them in my main system but that would require me to carry them upstairs. I would like to compare them to my JBL L300's but if they beat them out they wouldn't be able to stay, they fit in the HT room perfect.
 
I've owned RX-6, RX-1 and now have a pair of BX-2's. In my opinion MA makes one of the best speakers on the market. I'm not even using the BX-2 anymore but can't bear to part with them since they are the last set of MA speakers I have.
 
Among other MA sets, I've got a set of the non-'i" Silver 5 minitowers, Serial Number 0004. Mine, in natural cherry were made when they used the squarish wooden covers secured by screws for access to the mass loading chambers. The "i" models used circular plastic plugs for access. I use ASW210 subs with dual 10" drivers (one forward firing, one down-firing) instead of the ASW100 or ASW110 single-driver models (and as my daughter uses and loves).

One additional note for Silver 5i (or plain 5) owners.

You may wish to take a good look inside the cabinet to see if the foam padding pieces are properly located. I found mine had detached from the tops (2 smallish square pieces) and sides (two long ones). You can easily check the foam pieces' current locations by unscrewing and pulling out the crossover, placing your phone in the cavity, and taking a few pics up and down. Note: don't drop the phone!

If the foam is not firmly in place, I recommend pulling all three drivers, the crossover, and the rear port tube. Make sure to mark all speaker wiring and driver terminals for polarity. I used 3M Multipurpose Adhesive spray, applying a thin, even coat to each inside surface and and its foam section (already placed inside the cabinet). After a little time to get tacky, I then put the foam into position and pressed it in place. I then went on to the next surface and foam pair, and so on. Once all the pieces were glued in place, I left everything to dry overnight, made sure the pieces were fast the next morning (they were), reconnected and replaced the drivers (don't overtighten), reinstalled the port, and screwed the crossover back in place (don't overtighten). Tested speaker function at each driver, and the job was done. A month later, everything is still secure and in place.

My sub is actually the FB210, which I think superseded the ASW series in the mid 2000's. Same dual firing 10" drivers, but now with the C-CAM coating on them.

Sorry, didn't recognize it as the FB210 with the 10" drivers in black oak. Nice unit and HARD to find! I had the FB212 unit in cherry with my Gold Reference set. Very capable units.
 
I have a pair of the Silver RS8 towers and a FB210 sub in my main system. I bought the towers about a decade ago and will probably never sell them. There is a MA dealer about 3 miles from my house. They also sell PSB and Paradigm.

If you're ever in the dealer's shop, could you please ask if they have any shipping boxes left kicking around for their older model stuff? I'm always on the lookout for their great boxes as they're the berries for shipping MA speakers. Thanks.

I actually have the ASW110 sub, it came with my silver 5i towers. I haven't even tried it out yet, other than to see it works. The MA towers by themselves already put out plenty of bass for me, it's actually an amazing amount considering how small the towers and drivers actually are. The only speakers I have right now that put out more bass are my Klipsch KG4. I'm thinking if I can sell the ASW110 for a good price, I would've basically gotten the silver 5i for free.

Major PITA. I went through a couple buy/return cycles with Parts Express and got no joy, but that was a while back so maybe you'll have better luck. Likely, you're better served just ponying up for another grill with intact pegs. I know, but you'll (probably) see why...

P.S. Nice "get" on the minitowers and sub. Also, I'd at least TRY integrating the sub with the 5is; it can be a remarkable combo as that 10 incher gives the low end more, um, "threat" than the bottom woofer can manage with its higher tuned mate (2-1/2 way crossover).

The grill don't come up on ebay much. I ordered 3 different sizes of pegs with the same shape from ebay/china, they were only $2 per 10. My grills are pristine otherwise, except one has 3 broken pegs which makes it useless.

I don't really like subs for music. My HT has two 10" sealed subs, so again I'm not a bass head.

Oh, I thought you meant the sub grill, since you were talking about selling it. (Which if you have no intention of using it, seems to me like it still makes good sense, no matter how much or little you get for it.)

You're missing pegs on one of your 5i grills. Lemme look at my stuff. I've got a junked 10i with torn grill that should have the same pegs. If it does (I'll check one of my ASW210s), I'll see if I can pull them and send them your way.

That would be awesome if you have some pegs that'll work with silver 5i, I need 3. My ASW100 is actually perfectly fine visually and functionally. I may compare it with my sealed Energy 10", and if I like it better, I'll put the Energy ones up for sale, and watch out to try to score a 2nd ASW110.
 
So, do your 5i pegs have the full ball at the end or one with a flat? Also, have you been able to pull out the peg bases remaining in the sockets of the grill? (and the balls and shafts stuck in the speaker housings?) How are the peg bases set into those sockets? I don't have one I can look at to get an idea how to remove them since all my sockets are currently occupied by good pegs.

I have not pulled any of the bases out yet. But I've done it in the past, I basically take a heat gun, and pliers to slowly work it, and every now and they try to get a tiny screwdriver in between. With the broken ones, I drive a screw into the base, and do the same.

If you don't think you can remove them without damage, I wouldn't mind just buying a grill off you, and covering shipping.
 
The ones you have pictured, beside being knockoffs of the ones MA used, have the balls with the flattened end (like if they were filed flat). Take a look at the pegs used on your ASW110 vs. the ones on the 5is. Which type do you have on the minitowers (full balls or balls with flats)? I'm leery of matching my Silvers to what you have because I have the 5 model, not the later 5i ones like you.
