Unpopular opinion

Speaking of Pink Floyd. all they've done in the past forty years or so is repackage and reissue the music they recorded in their heyday.

And, that" Endless River" fiasco was a poor attempt at mood music and, from what I've read, was just discarded clippings from previous recording sessions. It sounded great in multi channel but it put me to sleep.

Here is an example (NSFW language, below, my apologies) of what I'm really gunning for. Of course, aimed at audio is fine, but can be anything. And.....I completely agree with the below. Always bothered me, tho lobster is delicious.

It's pretty ****ed up that we boil crustaceans alive.

I mean, I get the health concerns but...dude, that's still a living thing. There's the disconnect because it's a shelled creature that doesn't make any noise but that doesn't make it less ****ed. And we just casually put them into a pot of boiling water or a steamer and just wait til it's done.

Jesus...

Some opinions I've formed about music and gear, two of my favorite things, that are probably unpopular. Please take in the spirit of the thread. Normally I wouldn't post them.

MUSIC

I agree with what Keith Richards said about the Grateful Dead. They are boring, no energy, and plod and plod along without going anywhere. What a lightweight band!

Phil Collins and Genesis are almost impossible to listen to. They would have been easy to forget about forever if it wasn't for classic rock stations.

Kid Rock might be the least talented person who has ever gotten famous. He's the ultimate poser.

Billy Joel is a narcissist. Listen to the lyrics, every song is about him pumping himself up and putting other people down. Unfortunately, a lot of those songs have catchy melodies which is why he sold so many records.

GEAR

I'm not sure if anyone has ever substantially improved on the acoustic suspension speaker. Sealed cabinets sound better than ported ones.

Best vintage gear based on industrial design and sound - early to mid 70s Marantz receivers and Sansui/Kenwood integrateds from the same era. They all deserve the hype much more than McIntosh does.

The Pioneer SX receivers from the 70s look blingy with too many buttons. They remind me of a poorly designed jukebox. The big guy, the SX-1980, was the worst offender. Great marketing and distribution campaign, but ugly gear.

The ugliest gear of all time, on average, is probably Carver.

I grew up with vinyl and have a lot of records, but the CD was a major technological advance. A junky $10 CD changer which you can find in any thrift store will sound better than any turntable you can buy, no much how much money you spend on the plinth or the cartridge or how much time you spend cleaning your records. Plus, CDs have the ability of being able to go directly to a certain track and you don't have to flip them over.

Speakers make more difference in the sound than anything. Then the source, then the preamp, then the amp itself. Cables make very little difference - attenuation at the audio frequencies is almost nothing, so unless you have a ground loop or shielding problem don't worry about cables. Ironically, sound differences between amps and cables get discussed endlessly.

There, I've said it!

Keith Richards shouldn't talk. The rolling stones haven't put out anything good in 30 years. And I'm a huge stones fan.

I like acoustic suspension, too, but ported cubic feet still rule.

Nice writeup. I agree with most of what you put down in print.

Minor differences mind you. For example, I think Sansui and Marantz made gear that on the whole was more gaudy than Pioneer.... but nevertheless....

So many new movies need a more critical editor. I don't know how many movies I have seen that are over 2 hours (sometimes over 3), that could have made their point in much less time. It reminds me of some of those 1980s CDs that had 2 good songs and the rest was filler. The only good thing is that I can typically run to get something to drink or take a bathroom break without needing to pause the movie.

I've never seen an episode of,
Game of Thrones,
Hunger Games,
Any Star Wars film.
I doubt my life will be less meaningful for having avoided them.
There are just a lot of jokes you won't get because of this. That's all.
