Unstacking

For the umteenth time, what's wrong with stacking?

I can play A-set, or B-set, or both sets. Each configuration gives a different sound.

Like I've said in previous posts: "I'm no audiophile".

Rick

Retractions aside, this is one GREAT thread. From the time I got my second set of speakers (I think it was some small advents I recently gave to a friend), I have always attached one pair to A and one pair to B and virtually always run both pair. So, besides all of the new speakers I have not even tried out yet, I have other WIRING configurations to try. Lately I've had a Marantz TA-100, which allows only one pair at a time to play.

This site is outta sight.

Tell me I'm wrong....go on, tell me...

I did a thread like this when I first pulled my second pair of 4311's out of storage and stacked them on my present pair. I would never have thought there would be so many controversial angles and varied points of view on what I thought would be a neat thing to do.

All I want is 'A Wall Of Sound'. You should hear the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore East on this arrangement.

I gotta get one of those Radio Shack DB meters.

You're half-way to the answer. All you've gotta do is figure out WHY, now, and all will be revealed.

Hint: Multi-way loudspeakers incorporate crossovers....

No doubt AK has been through this many times before. Please save me the effort of tracking them down, and ennumerate the perceived advantages of stacking for all to consider here.

For the sake of brevity, you can leave out the "Allows me to envisage taller performers" one....

:p:

Zilch....I must have misunderstood you. Are you saying you are "Pro" stacking?

You must be a retired Professor.

A point on philosophy:

There is the perception that every posting on certain topics is PRO or CON.

Actually, I doubt Edison was for or against most of his theories. He was probably surprised a lot of the time. There are innumerable configurations, based on what each of us has cobbled together. Try what you have, without frying your amp, and enjoy the sound. Or change it.

Anyone can do whatever they want, of course, and will. I'd like to think there'd be some advantage to understanding what's going on, is all....

No, I totally advocate the "willy nilly" approach to life. Just attach the whatsitz firmly to the whatever and crank it to 11.

"supersize, return to splendor, with rock 'n' roll inferno."

and damn the torpedoes AND the electrons.

The "Wall of Sound" is already there. You've just gotta know how to play it back accurately.

That merely requires a decent system, properly configured and up to the task.

[Gonna put the Allman Brothers on right now, just to be certain. "Stormy Monday," for starters....]

Not to worry:

... Puberty will pass.... :p:

You are a mindreader, Zilch.
I was thinking: The optimal solution is the fewest GREAT components, with the least possible wiring. kind of like hiring strategies:
(a) get some old nags and flog 'em.
(b) get fast horses and let 'em run.

I can tell you (and am), would not have mattered how I wired my previous speakers, they didn't sound as good as these AR-3a sound right now.

What is the answer?

Gary's used his 4311's in single and stacked configuration. Ultimately, he prefers them stacked. That is the answer. I think that the fact that he's listened to them both ways and has chosen to leave them stacked speaks volumes to those that are stuck in a scientifically quantifiable position. Zilch, you should understand this, given your intellect. I didn't write agree, I wrote understand, and meant the subjective value of personal preference. It's a case of both parties beating a dead horse. As an adult, you must have certain foods that you've come to like over the years, right?
If you've ever talked to someone that didn't like one of those foods, did you go out of your way to convince them that for some reason they were wrong, or lacking? Same here.
Audio Karma is not the LHF. There are people from all walks of life, with all sorts of system configurations. We come here to share with lateral respect for one another. There is a very good, diverse Moderation team, not a group of clearly biased "friends" that allow for the condescending brow-beating of people that don't "follow the clique".
It is the double standard over there that has allowed domination by a few:thumbsdn: . Think of it like a football game. All the referee's are friends of one team, and want them to win no matter what the cost. You can't do that here  . When the decked is stacked against you there, you're toast. Here, you are incapable of having that same benefit, because no matter how big you are there, you're just a little fish in a big pond here.
I suggest that instead of making people guess what you're trying to say, just spell it out in plain english. I doubt that it will have the mind-blowing effect you'd like it to achieve, but everyone is entitled to give it a shot. Good luck with that, regards, Steve Gonzales.

Hi, Steve.

No one has "Bucked the trend" at LHF more persistently than myself, though I perceive it very differently.

Regarding the stacking subject of this thread, personal preference notwithstanding, Tapehead47 has twice now inquired, with emphasis in titles, as to the specifics of why his approach to application of audio technology (as opposed to rhubarb vs. asparagus) might be, well, "suboptimal." While it may be fair to argue that I baited him, I'm taking that at face value.

I'll say it again: I don't give a whittler's whit what others do with their speakers. I DO, however, happen to care that they be equipped with some modicum of understanding with respect to what they're doing. In this case, it's fundamentals at issue, and perhaps I can help with that part a bit....

I've don't augue with science. I don't augue with personal choice. Using an elitist tone here is not going to work either. Granted, he's asked the "why?". Tell him straight. It does not guarantee that it will have any effect, at least towards your position, as he's already switched back and forth between the two configurations and seems to like them stacked. I guess if you're taken to teaching, remember what conveys the point to effective understanding, and you'll go far. Use the method popular on that other site, and it is not going to do anything but cause grief.

Let's not replay our differences here, Steve.

Somebody wants to know about those, I'll provide the link via PM.

Elitist bottom line: My subwoofer is bigger.... :smoke:

No replay Zilch, just a head's up. Elitist= someone who gives another the impression that they are sooooooo great and their are looking down on the poor stupid masses and their obvious folly. Your "My subwoofer is bigger than your subwoofer" is the opposite. That's either arrogance, if one is serious, or high school level (or lower) bravado/braggadocio, if you're kidding. I hope your PM links to those that would care to know, would tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, I can accept that. I've got some interesting (now deleted) posts and PM's saved too. It might not be a slam dunk. Got Worms?
