Unstacking

Some measurements:

With the meter set according to a previous post, here's what I've got so far:

Spkr set Weight Max dB Min dB

A C 107 98
A 106 96

B C 108 96
A 106 92

A+B C 105 97

Didn't measure A plus B for A weighting. Are these measurements what one might expect? I plan to do a more controlled measurement event when I return home on Thursday.

Rick

The Max and Min are reflecting more the content of the music than the average listening levels.

It's the 30-second average I was looking for you to report, which is given at the end of the sampling period.

We'll need both A and C weighting for the three, i.e., 6 readings total.

Please report as "Top," "Both," and "Btm" so that others may follow what's happening more easily. It's too easy to confuse the speaker ID and the weighting.

Good results, though, Rick. Let me study them, a bit.... :thmbsp:

Edit: Based upon the Max readings, which, I caution, are not definitive, either pair playing alone is louder than the two together at the same volume setting.

Did that surprise you when you discovered it?

Is that what you hear, also?

If the average readings confirm this, we'll need to track down why that would be. I certainly didn't expect such a result....

Thanks, Zilch...
I'm going to remeasure all levels when I get back from the in-laws on Thursday. I'm studying up on the 30 sec. 'average' in the manual. I've got a lot to learn about this meter.

With the 'boom' I get from the bass drivers I can see where a bit of attenuation would help. But don't forget I'm in a 12'sq. room, so the speakers are almost 'nearfield'.

I'll be out of town for the next couple days. Will do further measurements on Thursday and report my results more accurately.

Best,
Rick

The critical aspect of "Nearfield" in this case is that it be devoid of boundaries, which reinforce the bass response; no proximity to floor, wall, corner, or ceiling. Nearfield monitors compensate for the lack of boundary reinforcement with accentuated bass response and are therefore "boomy" when boundaries are present....

Have a good trip, Rick.

And thanks for the nice pictures.... :thmbsp:

In regards to 4311 serial numbers

After reading another thread about 4311's I see Brainwashed has the best issue of them. Alnico magnets and all that. This is making me curious....is it worth it to 'upgrade' mine? How much difference could it make?
My wife insists I'm half-deaf anyway (but she's so wrong). My top set is my original pair, model 4311WX-A, ser. nos 81885 and 81884.
The bottom set are 4311WX-A, also. Ser. nos 60111 and 52024. (Actually, i'm thinking the bottoms are my original pair since I got them around 1974-75. the top set must have been made after that, but I don't know.)

I'm hoping Brainwashed's post helps me to learn how to recap them. I'm not an electrician, but I can handle a soldering iron. Since they're over 30 years old I imagine it's par to just replace the caps anyway.

Zilch: Will take the "average" measurements real soon. I've been out of town and right now I'm catching up on other things. Also still have to get the plumbers test plugs.

Rick

If you're out there, Zilch, don't give up on me yet! I've been too busy to finish the dB measurements. Still on the list of things to do.

If I recap my speakers, will the measurements need to be retaken? Tonight I 'de-pooched' my tweeters. The watercolor brush, H2O, and the special device hooked to the shopvac did fine.

That's all for now!

Rick
