Anyone have any idea what thiat means? I've seen this expression used in many model brochures.

Might be a changing bias. Overlap is standard in a transistor amp that is true class A. But that overlap is set by bias. Someone that knows circuitry and the 500 will bring the real answer soon enough.
 
Here is a brief description from a Model 19 brochure:

OK, you asked for it! ;) Here is the patent Marantz filed that describes the Variable Overlap Drive invention. (see attached document) Filed in 1969, patented in 1971. It looks like it is a circuit (method) to vary the amount of Class AB waveform overlap to minimize distortion. See highlighted sections, or read the whole patent.
