AR-8s match that driver layout, but were from 1973. So, probably AR38s speakers (as you thought), as they were introduced in '81.

AR Specs

They look really clean. Get 'em refoamed and recapped, and enjoy them again.

From the Teledyne days... I have a few from this era, and am amazed at how great they sound. I highly recommend that you recap these to get the most out of them. Hopefully you’ll like the outcome!

Visually similar but the '18s have an 8" woofer. It makes me wonder about the trade off between midrange and bass of AR-18 vs AR-38.

After decades of storage I'm looking forward to making them sing again, they were from my father. At 91 he still knows nothing about speakers (like father like son) but never spent a nickel on crap. His Led Zepplin iii LP is waiting. Thanks

That is strange. OP, are you sure that's a 10" woofer? I wonder if it was a private label deal for Eaton's. That looks like the cone tweeter that was used in entry level models. Everything I can find from that era has a finished horizontal strip across the bottom. I suppose it could have been removed.
