Should be a baby Heil in there where the Philips tweeter is. No-go without the Heil, quite sweet with them, though.

I'm a Heil freak-but the ESS models with the Phillips tweeters actually sound pretty good, and are well balanced.
The cab's are heavy, and could make a nice project
The problem with these, is the O.E. woofer has been replaced, (might be a Pioneer) so they aren't worth $120.
But who knows, that woofer might work out fine.

Yeah, but to me the whole point of ESS is the Heil; without it, it's just another speaker...

I get your point.
2 pairs of AMT3's are my main speakers.
But trashing a nice pair of cabs, with decent tweeters that could make a excellent project makes little sense, even if they don;t have the Heil.
If you look at the testing ESS did back in the day-the smaller non-Heils scored better then the small Heil speakers (not AMT Heils).
