It would probably cost close to that to make it's mate. That being said, I wouldn't pay that much and no one should as penalty to the seller for parting it out. That is really bad mojo on something as classic as this. Probably ANOTHER flipper who doesn't mind destroying history just to put a few bucks in his pocket. I truly despise when folks do that unless there is no hope for the cabs. This kind of stuff really pisses me off.:thumbsdn: My buddy often does this to huge classic JBLs and Altecs and it really angers me.

Yeah, that does seem a crime IMO. That's the second old Klipschorn I've seen for sale in this area that had drivers/horns removed. The other one at least still had it's woofer inside.

It must be nice to not have to work to pay bills. I part speakers all the time, it is the only way to maximize the return on the investment. Some of us are not lucky enough to have our family give us copious amounts of money to live off of. I myself need to squeeze every dollar out of each investment just to eat a meal and try to keep a roof over my head. It is a job, just like the tax man has a job, you may not like the audit you will receive. But you cannot be mad at the man for doing what is needed to put food on the table. This is a very difficult business to succeed in and getting harder everyday. Sorry for the rant, no affiliation.

That being said, I am into preserving audio, not profiting off of it. If that were the case I would have died from going hungry years ago.

I started this thread cause I thought that cabinet was priced pretty high for a unit that needed to be completely populated with drivers, horn and crossover. Just how in the heck does that translate into people not having to work or be born with a silver spoon in their mouth?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I still think it's a shame someone gutted that Klipschorn.

The seller had this item up at a price of $0.99 for a few minutes this morning. I tried to BUY-IT-NOW but the listing was ended as I submitted my request. I was still able to e-mail the seller and did so.

The seller called me back and tried to negotiate, first at $650, and then at $450. While I am looking for an old Klipschorn - to pair with the one I have from 1950 - that price was way to high for a shell that would also cost me a full day and $100+ in gas and tolls to pick up.

The auction now claims to be ended because the item is no longer available. I wonder how much it actually sold for. Obviously less than $450, but by how much?

Allow me to explain.

He wasn't inferring anything. He was correctly pointing out that you have no right to tell the owner of a speaker what he can do with it. If he chooses to part it out that's his decision. He's not "destroying history", he's preserving it by allowing two or three or four other Klipschorns to be restored instead of just one.

His comments about making a living were intended to point out, again accurately, that because someone is trying to make a living selling vintage audio gear is perfectly fine, whether or not you agree with it.

And, you "despising" people who make a living buying and selling audio gear conveniently ignores the obvious fact that you own audio gear, and you didn't make it yourself from piles of resistors and capacitors, you bought it.
