Vinyls

I can't believe this thread has gone this long!

I asked my 20 year old for his opinion, as he has used the dreaded "v" word before. His argument is these days when an artist issues a collection of songs he has issued an "album". there are multiple formats for that album. It can be online/mp3, on a physical CD, or on a physical "vinyl" disc (yes, I know they aren't technically vinyl!). He agreed he could call it a record, or a vinyl record.

I am of the opinion that this is a relatively small and unimportant battle in the English Usage wars. I get much more annoyed at the OMG/AFAIK/WTF-ing of our everyday language!!!

Intriguing thought Rex.

So, I pose a question here:.....how many words in this particular thread have been used incorrectly?

I vote to officially change the term used to describe a round 12" slab of vinyl in which a groove is impressed and spun on a turntable (oh wait.....is "turntable" a properly used word??? yes, it turns, but one could hardly call it a "table") TO.....

LICORICE PIZZA

Licorice Pizza was actually the name of a record/vinyl/LP/analog disc store in Lawndale CA where I lived through my high school years (1971-1975). I always thought that was the coolest name for record store.

"You keep using that word but I don't think it means what you think it means."

That line from Princess Bride just popped into my head.

You know, there are 10s of thousands (or more perhaps) of words in the English language. Only a small percent are used day to day. I am willing to bet a lot of words have changed meaning over the years. We use many everyday that probably don't mean what they originally did. I guess you could call it "language drift" (I may need to copyright that term).

I am also willing to bet all generations past have distorted the meaning of words through slang. I seriously doubt it is a new phenomenon. Not saying it is right, its just how language evolves.

As I mention in a previous post, the word vinyl is used almost universally by everyone discussing a music format that requires a turntable for playback. It may not be correct, but it has been accepted (by most, anyway). Is this not how many other words and their meaning came to be?

I only typed all this because, in my opinion, its not something to get pissed about. It may be unnerving to hear words and meanings butchered over time. But its not something you can stop. You can educate, but you can't stop it.

By the way, does the word "pissed" always mean what it means now? In England, doesn't "pissed" mean "drunk"?

Don't mind me, just rambling.

Don we now our gay apparel.

Rex is 100% right. Surely you guys who are bothered by the term "vinyls" an find something more important to obsess over.

Here's the thing. First, the fact that people in this thread keep mistaking an objection to the term 'vinyls' with the word 'vinyl' illustrates a lack of critical reading skills. I am not about to take correction from someone who cannot read. Second, I'll be irritated by whatever I wish to be irritated about, are we clear? I'm really not interested in what someone else thinks my pet peeves should be. You have your bugaboos, I have mine, so kindly step off. With all due respect.

That's good!

I sure hope that nobody is taking anything in this thread too seriously. There are a lot of other things that might be worth getting upset about. This certainly isn't one of them. Besides, "you say toMAYto, I say toMAto, let's call the whole thing off!" :D

Vinyls will outlive most of us. :D

As long as the next generation enjoys vinyls, let the next generation carry the torch.

I'm actually spelling the word vinyls with no 's.' It's just that the mind fills in the blanks.

I keep giving gear and help set it up. I ran into young people buying records and they don't even have a stereo yet. Most of them don't know what to get. I want them hooked because I want to keep buying them big black cd's. lol

I can't insert all the smilies from my iPod, but I am smiling.

That was exactly my point.
