Watching the meters dance - the formidable Sansui B-2301L (for Luxury) power amp

I was able to get it all back together last evening (after rebuilding the PSU and cleaning everything up - I did not replace any of the relays (or even clean them), as everything seemed to be passing signal well) However, I may pop in a new squadron of them down the road (nice sealed ones) depending on how long I will be utilizing this little guy. She is up and running now, and sounding pretty darn superb. Not bad for $300 and another $20 in parts.

Heck of a deal!

Jim - They’re a pair of JBL 4344 studio monitors from the 70’s but refurbished and reworked by Kenrick Sound in Japan.

I would love to hear that setup. Those are the kind of JBL reference speakers Sansui used in their amplifier testing. You are hearing Sansui as Sansui intended us to hear it. Very nice. Congrats.

UGH!!!!!! Another C2301 popped up on Reverb. Front looks VERY nice. The top panel has some missing paint. I do NOT need this now. The wallet hisses and spits!! Seriously, I will have to sell plasma. Someone buy this so I can't!!!!

I don't think selling plasma will get you there. Maybe a kidney. I'd love to get a C-2301, but that is going to have to be a long term objective. Too many other demands on the budget for the foreseeable future.

BTW, Sansuiman, are you "Son-Passion" on Facebook? Your avatar/background has that same vibe.

@Plimpington2, no sir. Have never been on Facebook, but surmise my avatar here has probably been used by others in different venues, since it is an image pretty easily found online. A former user here, @nosirrah, used a similar avatar years before I did (his had a white field around the green circle) and I only took it on well after his unfortunate passing. I've tweaked mine a couple of times, after finding a cleaner version of the graphic than that which I first used. I also briefly used a red & green version I made, around Christmas a couple of years ago.

Also, the black top covering the back looks to be a separate piece from the rear panel. However, is the black top cover at the front separate from the front panel? Can you check your unit and see what is what?

It looks like the salt air really got to all of the aluminum. Would need to strip and paint - way easier than trying to restore the faux wood though. Or hold out for a clean one.

If the aluminum exterior is that badly corroded, I'd be concerned about internal components like switch and relay contacts, and the internal components of pots as well. While relays can be replaced, switches and pots are much more difficult to source of the originals are trashed.

Yes, I agree 100%. In fact, it is important to me that the interior is good cosmetically (as well as functionally). I can fix many cosmetic issues (and am happy to pay less when I can for units that need TLC and can be brought up to a respectable spit and polish), but the front panel (which wraps around the top at the front) is likely a bridge too far. And the knobs look to be very difficult to salvage as well. I shudder to think what the inside looks like. At $1500, this would be worth taking a chance. But at $2750 it’s a risk. I’m passing.

On the other hand, the AU-X1111 mos vintage he listed at the same time looks damned near mint!!

@Plimpington2, I think it wise to wait for a cleaner example. This is not a model to gamble on a rough one, hoping to return it to full glory. I expect that if switches and pots have internal damage (as well as solder connections, leads on semiconductors, and even wiring harnesses) then you are just asking for ever ongoing intermittent problems that will be impossible to fully chase down and correct, in practical terms. The time and money spent trying to correct such issues will quickly run you beyond the cost of just buying a really nice one to start.

I've been down this road once, having bought a JDM AU-555A and QS-1 as a bundle (from a shop in Japan). They arrived in original boxes, and worked passably well, but were heavily corroded inside, and on the steel chassis and rear panel. Oddly, the aluminum bits (front panel and knobs) were undamaged, but filthy. Those cleaned up nicely. I eventually set the 555A aside as a parts unit, using the knobs, button caps and a few other bits for improving other components I had in the same series.

I eventually found a domestic QS-1 on the cheap that had been partially parted, but was in perfect cosmetic condition, so made a good unit out of the two, and the rest got put aside with other parts units I've retained. I'd like to find a clean 120V 555A, but it isn't a priority at this stage. I dont think I'd knowingly buy another component with this kind of corrosion present, unless it was dirt cheap.
