Middle to late 1950's home open reel, made into the early 1960's. No piece of junk, but no Ampex, Wollensak, or Berlant Concertone.

I found a nice tube coronet model at my thrift. It's waiting for a helper belt, but is in great shape otherwise.

The Coronet was a very nice recorder from Webster/Chicago. One of the best they ever built and performed nice. :tresbon:

I recently found a Webcor Royalite II "Stereofonic" portable. I just started a thread about cannibalizing it to make a SE 6AQ5 amp for headphone and late-night quiet La Scala duty. Any compelling reason to keep it as a tape deck? It's cute but it ain't no Nagra. It can probably be made to be functional (but why?) and it's moderately rough cosmetically - maybe a 6/10, maybe a little less. It's missing one of its two microphones, and the one it has sounds just like a baby's rattle when you shake it - not a good sign. There's LOTS of small loose pieces in there. It has a Webcor branded demo tape with a few classical pieces on it.

I finally looked those up on the internet, after reading about them years ago. It's just so bizarre- sound out of a strip of wire. Very solid looking machines, too.

The wire recorder I have was in the family, I still have spools with recordings of my grandmother playing her grandpiano with my mother, aunts and uncles singing. I am 62 these recordings were made in the late 40s early 50s.
