Wharfedale Owners Thread

Thanks for the tips and alerts. I will hopefully pop the backs off tomorrow. They are snug but moving so I may let gravity help on the bench. The top laminate on the ply back crackled up when I backed the screws out and my fingernail pulled a bit off around the hole on top. It's fairly brittle on the edges. I'll take pics and sniff out speaker codes.

Quick update. A surprise for me. No sand and two speakers. Here some pics. I will remove wire and pull it open, see what is what. It appears they are earlier w60's with possibly a 5 or super 3 inside. That metal cap should be 12mfd?

Yeah, to start off, how many drivers are there? Two or three? If two, then they are the original W60. If three, then see if they still have a port. If so, they are W60C's. No port, AND they still have the sand-filled rear panel, then W60D's. No sand-filled panel, then W60E's. That's the easiest way to tell.

The W60C has an early form of that purple tweeter (No cover on it like the later versions). The early W60D's had the same one, so remember the W60C is also ported (And to avoid confusion later, the larger W70C and W90C used a ceramic version of the old Super 3 cone-tweeter... The original W60 used a similar-sounding cone-tweeter based on the Super 5, which had been around for like a decade or more... The Super 3 is a better tweeter they reserved for their top-tier models like the W70, W90, Airedale, etc.). Anyway, back to the purple-colored mylar tweeter. It had three noticeably-different versions throughout that transition period after Gilbert Briggs retired. The first had no cover, the second version can be seen on the W*0D models. But if you want, go to my profile page, click on ALBUMS, amd check out the W60D pics I put up to see a shot with the grill off. Hard to explain the little black diffusor on there that aids with dispersion. And the W60E has a different-looking diffusor that covers even more of the tweeter. If you get to know the tweeters, it makes it easier to identify the speaker model.

The W60 models (ALL of them) can be placed vertically OR horizontally. I personally prefer horizontal, but either is fine. Just make sure the tweeter is at eye-level WHATEVER the placement. So that means that horizontal placement will have to be much-higher than if they were vertical/upright. Say 18-20" for upright and 25-30" for horizontal (resting on it's side). And if horizontal, make sure the tweeter is on the same side for both speakers. I have them on the left, but you can try either. Just remember what I said about always putting the tweeters at eye-level (ear-level).

By the way, when I removed the screws on the back of one of my W60's, the back didn't want to come out, so I left it there for a day or two with something to stop it if it fell out more than an inch or two, and then when I got back to it, it was loose.

So, getting back to the first paragraph, lets see if we can't determine exactly which version you have. Like Brian said, they did sell unfinished ones that people could stain/finish the wood themselves.

Great info GT......however......I think there may be variations depending on where the were built. My W60's are 2 way ported and NOT sand filled. The backs are original but perhaps if they were built in Canada the sand filled back was not done.
Here is a link to the thread of my re-conditioning. http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=534554.
Any other Canucks with 60's that can chime in on this theory?

Ok, final follow up. I popped it open fully, and speakers are good. The tweeter is not purple. it is paper with a felt surround, and it is a Wharfedale. I have attached pics. It measures 3.75" and the date on it is 6/63. So I have a pair of a more sedate cab version of a W60 from the summer of 1963. I blue-washed the pot, and cleaned of the (cadmium?) dust off the backs of the speakers. The 12mfd cap is clocking in closer to 25mfd. If there are any suggestions for a decent replacement for that, I would appreciate reading them. I'll get around to that at some point. I plan to lightly sand the cabs to even out the eh shape of the finish and tung oil them. Then I will run my old Fisher through them a while and see how it goes. I think they are pretty fun, even if they weren't anything I was in the market for. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, I thought those were the early ones. What you have are the ORIGINAL W60, which debuted in 1960 and was named to commemorate the year. Does your woofer have a red-banded magnet too? I would imagine it does, which would indicate that very-first version. The tweeter is basically a Super 5 that's tweaked specifically for use with the W60 (The standard Super 5 was used in the W2, which was the inspiration for the later Dovedale models, but the Super 5 dates all the way back to like 1952... I think it was used in that big omni-directional corner cab prior to the introduction of the Super 3 in 1955).

I have that same model. If I was gonna' do it, I would put some high-voltage oil caps in there, The PCB-era ones are best, but the later, non-PCB oil caps are okay to use as well. I would just make sure they're like 600VDC or higher. I power mine with a 1964 Fisher 800C, which is an excellent match for those ported Wharfedale models from the mid '60's and earlier.

When you get yours going, try them with Beatles, Hendrix, the Stones,Zeppelin, etc. They're great classic-rock speakers, and they do best with tubes, although a tube-like solid-state amp or receiver like an early solid-state Sansui, Sony, Sherwood, Scott, etc. will work nicely too.

Add one to the modern Wharfie list... I just purchased a pair of these... 80th Anniversary Denton stand-mounters.

Midwoofer by Rawlings... :D

Been looking at some of the XP models. Looks to me like they used all Leak-manufactured drivers in the 3XP series. Even that woofer has that polystyrene layer over the front of the cone that Leak was known for using, and that mid is DEFINITELY a Leak product. Likely the tweeter as well. And that definitely doesn't look like a Wharfie woofer. No inverted surround like the W*0E models. The high-end SP series from 1975 used some/all Leak drivers too (This, of course, coincides with the Rank Group's purchase of Leak in '69 and the subsequent restructuring of Wharfedale's marketing strategy that led to "the mid-fi years" of the '70's). I never realized how many Wharfedale speakers from the '70's were actually Leak products more or less. The cabs were probably assembled in the country of distribution.

What I'm wondering is, what other drivers, if any, did Wharfedale manufacture between 1970-'77 besides the ones for the ****dale 3 and W*0E series. I should re-read that chapter of the Wharfedale/Briggs biography and see what they say about it.

Looking forward to a Wharfiholics view on the new purchase GT.

Yeah, you and me both. Let me know when he gets them. I don't wanna' miss out on the details.

.............

;)

Nah, I'm pretty-excited about 'em. They'll likely be a few days because it was free GROUND shipping, but they're coming from Virginia, so it shouldn't be TOO-long. Did you check out that video?

They look rather LUUUUSSHHUS!! Full update on how they sound ASAP:banana:

I love 'em, and I'm just scratching the surface. Several AK'ers bought them and love them. Reviews were excellent. I'm surprised at how good they sound with just a Fisher 800C powering them.

Playing the JB's 2CD "Funky Good Time: The Anthology" right now, and the Dentons really do an excellent job with this stuff. A very-musical, engaging speaker with a smooth sound that still does well with modern music.

Probably got a bit of burn in time I would think before they really open up.

Agree that oil cap is the best but you do not need anything like 600 volts. You can easily get by with 50-100 volts unless you are going to try blowing the drivers out of the cabinet. A cap voltage at or below the maximum voltage a driver can take can act as a fuse and save the driver. A 50 volt cap from memory will handle a 100 watts into 8 ohms, from memory. There is acalculator on the web.

I guess you don't need the w90's anymore. I'll be by in the morning to pick them up.
