Hi guys!
I've enjoyed my audio journey thus far, but am certainly in need of a change of speakers. When me and a good friend started the journey, our first real speakers were a set of Klipsch Tangent T200's for myself (I heavily improved the cabs, dampened the horn and upgraded the crossovers) and he still has his beloved KEF 103.2 (which I just recapped - they sound amazing!)
A couple years ago I made a sideways leap into a pair of Wharfedale W70B's. The midranges are alnico, tweets and 12's ceramic. This is the model you cannot remove the grill from.
I also have a set of Tannoy C8's.
So the proposal. The Tannoys have unbelievable bottom end, too much to be perfectly honest, sweet highs (pretty reminiscent to the T33's in my buddys KEF's (both silk dome). The midrange has always lacked. Considerably. I think the 8' is just too subby to get a lot of the mids so the tweeter is left to make up for it... I'm debating on building new cabinets and making a 3 way speaker with the mids from the Wharfedales and tweets from the Tannoys. I think the crossovers should be pretty easy... both of these speakers run in full range except the tweeters which have a single cap. I've never built a cab from scratch, so I'd need to do some research there... open baffle has always intrigued me... maybe thats something to experiment with? I'm undecided on which woofers I'd go with, which I'm sure would have an impact on cab size... but first thing first... is this sinful? is it a good idea? Any suggestions? I also think the a part of the issue with the Wharfies in general is that the grill doesn't come off. It's very thick, and they're old, probably a lot of dust locked in them.
