Wharfedale W70 to Econowave conversion!

Check for VC rub on the woofers. I've read the cones can sag and an easy fix is to rotate the woofs 180 degrees.

Anyone can tell which caps exactly should I order?
Is 4nf the 'model #'?

Has anyone determined WHICH W70 version the OP has?? Makes a huge difference. Until sure, I wouldn't go running a 100w per channel amp through them (I wouldn't use that much power, period - None of the W70 models could ever handle that much). Could be the old W70 (without the letter after the number), which can't handle the wattage of the later models. And it seems that some people are under the impression that the OP has W70D's, but I saw no mention of that. The W70D's and W70E's are a totally-different design from the older W70.

Is it a 3-way? 4-way? What-way? Important to know before making any decisions about Econowaving or even re-capping. Maybe you just need to be using the right receiver/amp (You DID say it responded to the Sansui, right? Probably heading in the right direction, but may need to use a similar model with more-appropriate power). You (the OP) may find that you like those speakers after all. Something tells me that you need to power them with something else - Possibly something less-powerful than your HK but more-powerful than the Sansui (If you have either W70D's OR W70E's, then an early '70's solid-state Sansui with the right amount of power will do the trick, but if you have the earlier W70, then you'll probably need something lower-powered - Maybe tubes, although early '70's solid-state Sansui stuff may still work). I have W60E's, and the Sansui 2000x works great with them, as does a 4000, and probably any of their 40w-45w receivers/amps from the same early '70's era. Using an older receiver definitely-showed a huge improvement over the newer, higher-powered NAD integrated amp (from '81-'83) I was originally-using. I went from the NAD to an older, entry-level Rotel with half the power, and the sound got WAY-better. Now I'm using a Sansui 2000x, and it's like my W60E's finally woke up. I'm getting great sound from these things. So if you have W70D's or W70E's, then a 5000x might be a good choice for them, depending on which version you have.

Recapped

I just recapped them a few weeks ago and I think they are a lot of better.
For now they are very nice for for acoustic, jazz and vocals.

To Gang-Twanger:
I am sure they are a 3-way W70 without any letters.
Would you still recommend a Sansui 2000X or something similar?

Thanks to all.

Great to hear. I'm planning on doing the same.

What brand caps did you go with and were you able to find them in 4uf 250v?

Steve

Good that they are doing better. Econowaving the would be like taking a '53 Vette and gutting it trying to make a '63 out of it. There are a lot of trashmobiles and trashospeakers to do that with. If ultimately you do not like the sound and for a lot of persons they may not be their cup of tea please move them to someone who would like them and there are a good number of them rather than destroying a nice vintage speaker system.

Hey Folks,
Looksl ike I scored a set of w70d's. I should get them this week.

What caps are in the w70d's? Also people mention differnt types of amps to drive these with. Anyone have a recomendation? I generally run tubes but have soem solid state hanging around.
I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. I have wanted a set of these for many years.

I'll post more when I get more info and pics when I get them.

Hmmmm..I'm wondering if the "D" model has the15 inch woofer. IIRC, the "E" model has them. Can't say what caps are in there.. guess you'll hafta open it up to find out. :sigh: I used Dayton 10% DMPC caps for my W-60E
s and Smaller Advents. Jantzen makes 5% tolerance at about a third greater cost. I may try them next, but doubt that I'll hear the difference.
