Have a new computer - Dell Inspiron running Windows 8. What anti virus/spyware/firewall should I run? McAfee trial expired. Is that really worth $60/year?

They'll have to pay me more than $60/year to use it. ESET Smart Security is the best; Avast and Kaspersky are pretty good. Combine any of those with Malwarebytes Antimalware.

I run Kaspersky. It is what I like and recommend. I never pay full price. What I do every year. I wait for the the new year version to come out and buy the old one on sale. Install it and go to manufacturers web site download and install the new version and BAM! newest version. Example, I just bought Kaspersky internet security 2013 3 liscence version from Staples here in Canada. Came home installed and updated. It's not illeagal because you have purchased a legit copy. Total cost to me? $17.99 plus tax!!! And to answer you question, it is running succesfully on W8.

I am not crazy for Kaspersky anymore as it is a multi-thread hog. I had it on my wife's PC and it literally took up 15 threads by itself. It slowed her PC down to a crawl - so I NEVER recommend it any more.

That's unfortunate. All of my desktops/laptops are older W7 units and are not powerhouses by any means and they run fine.

As far as I'm concerned, Winblows 8 IS a virus...

:thmbsp:

I remember CEO of SUN years ago caling Windows a "fur ball" screwing up computers. His concept was the network is the computer. We're getting closer to that but not there yet.

How about Windows Defender + Malwarebytes? :scratch2:

Panda Cloud for light weight, and it doesn't bother you all the time, or try to scare you.

I have been using the free version of Panda Cloud for the last year.

I was running Windows XP on an older computer. I put AVG on it and it really slowed me down. I took off AVG and put on Panda Cloud and got much better speed.

I recently got a newer computer with Windows 7 and have been running it with Panda Cloud and have had no problems.

I have a Dell XPS, which came with McAfee. I almost took a new subscription, when I learned that McAfee isn't what it used to be. Now I use Bitdefender Total Security 2013, it does a good job. Besides antivirus, it has firewall, basic tuneup, encryption, ... It has also theftprotection with location service, lock and nuke function.

Once a year I run the Tune Up Utilities trail to thoroughly remove redudant clutter. Each year a new version is released with a 15-day trail.

Another tool I use is Shields Up!, Gibson Research Corp, to check if my homenetwork is stealthed and firewall settings secure.
