What are you Listening To Right Now? - and more

Up on my "box"....I am all for helping people out here. I frequent the Dig Docs area and help out finding and getting manuals people are asking about. I see @painttoad helping out quite often too. BUT.....at least type your ask in the search block before you come asking for help. I just went over and saw someone asking for 3 different manuals. Took me less than a minute to find them FREE by just searching. That just chaps my butt! Sorry if I am being a d$ck, but damn! "Off my box".
Literally everything can be found on the internet. I’m amazed at what gets asked on AK.

Rat Cars Modified — The Rat Rod Movement Explained

Rat cars, or rat rods, are a subculture of custom vehicles that reject polished perfection in favor of a raw, unfinished look. They are built to be driven, not just displayed, and often feature rust, exposed welds, salvaged parts, and mismatched components xerodrive.comxerodrive.com+1.

Origins and Philosophy

The rat rod style emerged from the hot rod culture of the 1940s–1950s, when working-class builders modified old, inexpensive cars for speed and personal expression. Over time, a branch developed that valued imperfection over polish — visible patches, dents, and patina were seen as part of the story xerodrive.comxerodrive.com+1. Influences include biker, greaser, rockabilly, psychobilly, and punk subcultures, which also embraced rugged, individualistic style WikipediaWikipedia.

Key Characteristics

  • Patina is sacred: No full repaint; rust is preserved or stabilized notenoughcylinders.comnotenoughcylinders.com.
  • Mechanical priority: The engine, suspension, and brakes are the focus; the body can be “left as is” notenoughcylinders.comnotenoughcylinders.com.
  • Originality over uniformity: No two rat rods are the same; each reflects the builder’s personality xerodrive.comxerodrive.com.
  • Functional over decorative: Built to run, often with loud, high-performance engines ThrottleXtremeThrottleXtreme.
  • Creative reuse: Parts from scrap yards, farm auctions, or even non-automotive items (e.g., a rifle as a gear shifter) are common WikipediaWikipedia.
Rat rods are counter-culture statements — a rejection of showroom-quality builds. They celebrate improvisation, humor, and mechanical honesty, often appearing in street scenes, rallies, and meetups xerodrive.comxerodrive.com+1. Some are “sleeper cars,” looking stock but hiding powerful modifications notenoughcylinders.comnotenoughcylinders.com.
