What Artist passing affected you the most

Many that have been mentioned, I think most direct was Kurt. We had tickets to see Nirvana at the Orignal Aladdin, now the PH. I remember exactly where I was when I heard it on the radio, I shut the job down that day and we all had severe hangovers the following morning.

The other is Biggie smalls. I really like his rap, and just like Kurt I often wonder what we've missed..

Oddly enough I'd say John Lennon. I was a bigger Dead head than Beatles fan but I was younger and more impressionable. Also John was taken. Jerry was battling addiction was in bad shape for a lot of years. It wasn't so much of that it ended up happening but when.
Jimi,
Zevon,
Keith Moon,
Duane Allman,
Zappa
Elvis (more because he was an icon than I was a fan of his music)
Harry Chapin ( again more circumstance than fandom) I was going to see him the night he died. Was listening to a cassette in the car. It was a free concert in Eisenhower park. Was walking towards band she'll and people were walking away and there were cops everywhere. I asked what was going on and they said that he died.
Probably more if I dwell on it a bit.

Here's one that hasn't been mentioned yet: Joe Strummer. My brother-in-law was a huge fan and was really upset about the news. He even met him once a few hours before the sold-out gig. Joe asked if he wa going to the show that night and mt bro-in-law responded that he couldn't get a ticket. Joe got him in at no charge.

No way to come up with a 'most'. I've no particular reason or order for this (highly incomplete) list. Each meant a lot to me musically. I was a huge admirer of each to the point that I feel connections with them though I only saw about half of them perform. Phil Lynott, Randy Rhoads, Jimmy Bain, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore, Zappa, Eddie Hazel, Ronnie Dio, Glen Buxton, Dave Peverett, Philip Taylor, and not two months later, Lemmy, Johnny Cash, Rod Price, Alvin Lee, Jack Bruce, Jon Lord, Lonnie Mack, Chris Squire, John Entwistle, Cozy Powell, Darrell Sweet.

Cobain, Layne Staley, and Chris Cornell: three distinct voices from the same era and genre who created a great body of work. My sadness with all three is a bit selfish on my part because I regret that there won't be anything more from them.

This is how I feel about Randy Rhoads. It's not so much his passing that affected me, but that we have a relatively small body of work from him. I think that @Northwinds mentioned Randy may already have had reached a peak, but he was so young and an avid student of guitar (he was continuing his studies of classical guitar when he passed) that I feel he would have grown immensely as a musician.

Sort of an interesting thought.
I was thinking the answer will be more a reflection of where we were when it might've happened than what we may have thought of them artists. There are many others listed that I really enjoy (or sometimes only appreciated) but at the time of their passing I wasn't tuned into the event so much.

Currently - Glenn Campbell but this is because of the fact that my mother in law is suffering with Dementia. It is a tough disease to deal with and see people go through.

That's a good point (personal experience resonates)

Affected in a different way:

Elvis - I was almost 6 years old and living in Tupelo, MS (his birthplace). I lived about a mile or so from his childhood home. It was so surreal seeing people come to my town by the bus load to pay tribute.

When older:
Jerry Garcia

Most artists who have passed that I REALLY care about now, I was too young to know/care or not even born yet.

The ones that bum me out NOW but I was too young or not alive then - Jerry Garcia (although I still remember the day his death was announced, I was too young...didn't listen to GD yet), Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, John Lennon, George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Bradley Nowell, Gram Parsons

The ones that hit me hard at the time it happened, and still do - Levon Helm, Glenn Frey

Man, I feel like I'm forgetting a lot of these. Chris Cornell and Layne Staley...

I will be REALLY devastated when John Prine passes away. My wife and I love him and his music dearly!
