Bowie, which is odd since I wasn't a superfan or anything.
Space Oddity was one of my mother's favorites (though he was a classic country fan) and one of the first songs of his I heard on the radio; maybe that was an emotional trigger.
 
I remember having to sit down in the middle of cutting lawns when I had my landscaping business in full swing for Jerry Garcia and Kurt Cobain. I just shook my head. But before either of those was Bon Scott! Bad ass!

Recently, it's Petty. The unexpectedness was terrible. It still just hurts, especially after my wife bought tickets for me for my birthday present for us to see him on the 40th Anniversary Tour. She knew his music, but only the hits. She knew I had seen him, so she thought it would be fun. It was great! I hadn't seen him in 3 children and 10 years. She was blown away. I was indebted, even more so after he died. It's still tough. He was a master and the music of my life: 8-48yrs! Remarkable.
 
It tends to bother me when any classic artist of any genre passes. I wasn't a huge fan of Michael Jackson, but I hated to hear it. Even if you don't like their music, you have to give them the fact it's unique, something not found in much of today's music in any genre. I'm reminded of this song by The Possum:

 
IMHO … Keith Whitley was like the Jim Croce of Country Music .. had a hell of a career ahead of him.

Passed from this world much too soon .. probably w/out realizing how good of a country singer he really was. .

Absolutely! I've heard comparisons between him and Hank, Sr. just besides the dying young part. So talented. One has to wonder how the course of country music would've been changed had he have lived, the same I've always pondered about Hank. Had Hank have lived, would rock and roll have been the explosive force it was that changed country music? Would Hank have dabbled in it? If Keith would have lived, would Garth Brooks (who I thoroughly enjoy) have been the powerhouse he was? Would country music have kept to a more traditional place had Keith continued recording? Heck, you could even ask if the current "bro-country" nonsense would have occurred if he'd have lived.

I don't know what you mean by the "bro country" but, I can imagine because ever since "Country Western" music has been taken over by losers who evidently couldn't make it in there preferred music, CW music has suffered in my opinion and I quit listening to any newer stuff. Granted there are quite a few still a bit traditional with a little rock mixed in that I do like but, most should NOT even be affiliated with CW music as I see it. That's just my opinion.

Doubt it would have changed the course of Country Music … this was in the 80's .. the radio stations at the time criticized Keith originally (before his hit songs) for being too country (traditional). Even back then the trend toward pop was underway. IMHO .. my best guess is his career would have probably been similar to Alan Jackson.


Good documentary on Keith .. poor audio quality.

Richter much preferred to perform before an audience rather than in a recording session. Fortunately, many of his live performances have been captured, such as his Carnegie Hall debut recitals, and are generously available on resources like Spotify.
