What can $4K get you if you are a newbie?

Where did I say that?

I followed the advice I gave op. I started with a decent vintage table (which is still quite nice), and then I decided what I liked most and how to spend my money on a more expensive rig.

My "starter" in the world of turntables was a POS Yorx that I had at age 5.

You carefully omitted to mention the notion that the discussion is about a STARTER setup.

Listen, when I bought my first turntables I had auditioned the Linns and Michell turntables and thought them wonderful, but out of my league. Given the money, I'd not have bothered with the budget specials I ended up with. There is no logical reason not to start off with the best if you can. It saves a lot of dissatisfaction with an utterly pointless "journey".

I'd have learnt to drive in a Jag too, given the chance.

None of this is helping the OP, who has stated clearly what advice he required from the forum. Your advice, and that of a few others it has to be said, was inappropriate in that context.

I offered advice to get him what I feel would be the best use of his $5k.

Since I suggested getting acclimated to vinyl with a vintage table, you accused me of being a reverse snob and of being jealous (Which was really uncalled for, unnecessary, and "inappropriate.")

When I pointed out that I have a modern vinyl rig in roughly the same price range he is looking for, then I carefully omitted that it was about a starter rig? I explicitly mentioned that I wouldn't have been as happy with it if it had been my first rig (because it probably wouldn't have, since I didn't really know what I wanted.) That was the entire point of the advice; I learned from a cheaper rig what I liked most about the vinyl experience, which helped me more wisely invest some months down the road. I explained several logical reasons not to spend $4k up front, but you seem to have illogically deduced that I must have some kind of jealousy issue.

From my perspective, it looks like you are either just looking to pick a fight or are lacking in basic reading comprehension skills. Either way, I see no point in pursuing this discussion with you.

The OP has made his wishes clear, and he has received advice on several new tables, as well as recommendations from another camp who think that money might be better spent with a different plan.

He will choose what he decides serves his interests the best. Best wishes to him, either way.
 
Please read the OPs posts. He's made it abundantly clear what he wants. Willful misunderstanding isn't helping.

If I stop to ask for directions to get to New York I don't expect lectures on why I should go to Chicago first.

EAR 834P phono stage.

In the price range and it will make beautiful music. Can't see anyone not liking it either.

A:You don't know what you want in a house until you've lived in a couple, buy a vintage trailer first, It will put a roof over your head just as well as a new house, then move up when you're ready, you'll appreciate it more... :lmao:

Just make the suggestions that the guy is looking for, judging from the rest of his system, he know's what good sound is, and he's not afraid of shelling out to get there, no need fkr a multi-step process to get to a satisfying turntable.

I've always been in the buy what you can afford camp.....sure, its generally over what you *need* but right what you *want* :thmbsp:

$5k would get you a nice custom built table likely able to see off the best of them!
 
Unlike motorbikes, etc...there is NO difference to setting up something like a VPI than there is setting up a budget table. The only difference is the VPI will sound better when you figure it out. And yes I'm lumping sub $1000 TTs into budget in this case, even though that is simplifying things and still quite a budget.

The learning curve for vinyl is overblown. VPIs come with a protractor and stylus force gauge. Good to go.

4K is no budget, believe me. I earn every cent and it is no small expendature. However, I have to point out that even if I don't get to the "analog end" I can assure you that with my system right now I am in bliss already. Everything hereafter is a "more rosy picture of heaven".
 
That is why Frank Sol stated "budget is relative". Everyone is in a different financial situation and everyone's income and expenditures are different. To some, $4k is not a large sum of money and everyone when giving suggestions or recommendations have to look at it from the OP's situation and not their own, especially if the OP has stated his wants and needs as in this thread.
