What did you spin in 1963?

After checking out a few 45's from the WLS top 40 list at Deluxe, I'd saunter over to Olsen Electronics, grab something off the discount table I could maybe make into something useful, and catch a double feature at the Portage Theater.

You forgot to stop in Stanton Hobby!!

Earlier someone mentioned "Meet the Beatles", but it wasn't released until January 1964, although Walter Cronkite did a report about them in Fall 1963.

Correct...along with "Introducing The Beatles" on VJ! I think "I Want To Hold Your Hand" was rush released in late December 63' from what I remember.

Deluxe Music in Chicago, as mentioned earlier, actually stocked VJ 498 "Please,Please Me/Ask Me Why in early 63' with The Beatles mis-spelled with 2 T's. This rare 1st US Beatles 45 actually charted and reached #35 in mid March 63' on the WLS Top 40 in Chicago. And was played for a couple of weeks thanks to DJs like Dick Biondi.

Bill at Deluxe Music always carried the WLS Top 40, and claims to have sold a few copies during that time. He's the only person I've actually met to have sold this very rare and historic Beatles VJ 45 back in 63'. Almost a year before they appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show!

1963...ahhhhhh

Well I was a Senior then and a Senior now...figure that out :scratch2:

My parents bought a new Magnavox console ~1962...I remember my mom had a fit at the cost :nono:

I cannot remeber the model but I wore out needles and records like crazy.

I still have most of the records from 'back then'...some I remember playing ~ 1963 and annoying my neighbors and parents were:
1) Martian Hop....(weird sounds I really liked!)
2) Surfin USA
3) Ring of Fire
4) Sally Go round The Roses...(weird lyrics)
5) Deep Purple (April Stevens, Nino Tempo)
6) Sut Down...I was into cars!

Can't remeber all....but I can only play them now on a TT I set up with 'depleated uranium stylus' :D

Yup - we used to buy model rocket engines and jetex fuse to make weapons of mass destruction and try to blow up Wilson Park.

I've got an LP here from WLS circa 1963
"Treasured Tunes from the Vault"

Went to see Dick Biondi at the station and he gave it to me.
At 10 I didn't have the presence of mind to ask for an autopgraph.
I'll have to dig it out.

I'm a '63 model myself, sooo that puts me spinnin' in my mum's belly!

You very likely could have been hearing stuff spun on just such a unit by your folks.
Is your mom still with us? If so, it would be interesting to hear what she was spinning while you were in utero. Could be an insight into your personality.

Trying to hear decent music on a piece of crap phonograph player to no avail.
But wait, transistors are coming-transistors are coming.
And yeah, what is that Dylan guy trying to say?

Dylan, Donovan, Ventures, Telleman, Scarlatti, Bach, Hayden etc
Regards,
Jim

Born Feb '63 . . . I was spinning my bottle!
Folks had a big 'ol Maggie console that finally gave up the ghost in 1979!

In 1967, I was 3 years old. My first Christmas gift phonograph and records was a Mono MusicMaster. In 1973, I got my first separates I kit built.
