I'm going to check out a pair of JBL L80T speakers tomorrow and wanted to tap you all for what you knew about them, specs and value.

What do you know about JBL L80T's?

I've seen the L80T's on an online auction once, went (here in Poland) for the equivalent of 200 bucks if I remember correctly.
I myself own a pair of L100T's, which is most probably the better known "big brother" of the L80T's and the successor of the L100 model.
All I can say about the L100T is that they're one hell of a loudspeaker. Groundshaking, undistorted bass, very clear highs. It's also very dynamic, over 90db for sure. It should be the same for the L80T's. The "T" stands for the titanium cones of the tweeters.

Wish I could tell you more. I picked up a pair with a Sansui TU417, a JVC amp and cassette deck for $75 bucks. I fired the speakers up and the surrounds turned to dust in a minute or two. They sounded pretty good for the time being. I pulled the woofers out so I could get them repaired, and someone had DESTROYED one of the baskets. I put them back together, wrapped them in plastic, and put them up on the pallet rack in the warehouse for a winter project. The busted basket is beyond repair, so I need to locate a replacement. They did sound good for a bit, though.
Kinda shocked there is only two replies. Must be fairly unknown.

When refoaming, shims are a must.
If one of tweeter voice coil leads corrodes to the point of breaking, it can be spliced with a single strand of speaker wire and some solder.
They sound pretty dang good.
Just MY experience, mind you.

They are now here in the basement and there little bros. the L60T's have now gone into the new upstairs living room system.
I have not had a chance to really listen to them yet but I do know they are power hungry. I'll post up picks and thoughts in a few days.

I just got an orphan really beat-up JBL 4410... no grille, cabinet kind of trashed, tweeter dead... but SAME 127H-1 woofer as the L80T, working!
PM me... I'll gladly sell it. I would hate to see a pair of L80Ts not working!
Needs refoaming, but I can handle that before sending it (as well as providing the same foam for your other woofer)...

BTW: I've NEVER had to shim a 127H-1. No need to cut the dustcap. Has worked every time for me...
BTW^2: The L80T is, IMHO, one of the very best sounding JBL consumer speakers of the 1980s. Behind the 250Ti and the 120Ti, it would be my third choice of ALL the JBL consumer speakers made in the 1980s, period! Great sounding midrange balance, very good bass (when the woofers are refoamed with the CORRECT soft-compliance surrounds)...

I gotta admit that I really dig these speakers. I've listened to them every day since I have got them on a few different systems.
I beleive they will be finding a place next to the Valencias in the main rig.
How are yours bentpencil?

I had 2 pairs of L80Ts back in the late 80's... I wish I still had those!!!
They totally rocked! I wish I could just go to Highland Appliance and buy
another pair... oh wait... that was 20 years ago!

If they sound anything like their big brother the L100t3, you'll be listening to them for a long time. They do rock! I'm real fond of the veneer on all four sides too. Nice looking speakers.

In really good condition with local pickup, I would say that is about right. Be sure the foam is pliable and in good shape.
I'd go with an old school 100 wpc receiver.

I just finished parting out a trashed cab set of 80T's. Darn nice components! Wished the cabs had not been so nad I would loved to have revived them!
Heavy cast frame woofers, super clean sounding mids and those famous high demand 035 Titanium Tweeters. Plus the xovers were not shabby either, poly caps, etc
I bet you will like them when you get them up and going. DO get the correct compliance type foam as Gordon suggested. He will steer you right!

Also, do I need a sub with this system?

Just sold a very nice pair of L80t's last week for 250.00, just what I paid for them, Only had them for about 6mo and was just "not impressed".....component quality seemed very good, but they could not hold a candle to my L36's in an a/b comparison....two different animals I guess....:scratch2:

Paid 250.00 plus shipping for my 4410A's worth every penny IMO. 4410 is the later pro version of the same speaker. Very neutral sound. I found that I needed a little tone control boost for both bass and treble to get the sound I like. Had considered building a sub to go with these with an 18" jbl just never got around to it. 150.00 is a good price evan if they need foam.
