What FM antenna are you using!?

Just dropped some pretty serious coin on having my Sansui TU-9500 restored & aligned. Its fabulous. Nicest FM I've ever listened to. Now I want a decent antenna. Using a cheap dipole right now, have also tried just plugging in my rooftop TV antenna, but was told the Dynalab ST-2/Metz SS-8 is the way to go. . . thoughts/opinions!?

Depends on your location. Go to fmfool.com and plug in your address for a list of stations in your area, their estimated signal strength, and direction from your location.

I have a low opinion of whips; they're overpriced and have negative gain. But you might get usable reception from a whip, preferably mounted as high as possible. Omnidirectional antennas won't help much with multipath (remember ghosting on television before it went digital? Same thing on FM) and interference from other stations and other sources. And the gain is lower than a dipole. A whip is simply the least visually obtrusive way to have an outdoor antenna, and not always a way to get good reception.

Or you might have to go to a directional antenna and a rotator, also mounted as high as possible on your roof, if that's a possibility. Your existing TV antenna, IF its an older model designed for channels 2-6, may serve nicely. The Antennacraft FM-6 is the last reasonably priced directional FM antenna left on the market with decent gain, but the Channel Master CM-3026 3 element Yagi might be good enough.

Check the chart generated by fmfool and see if the signals are strong enough. You might get by with a simple whip or even a random length of wire, or it might require more effort to get good results.

My present antenna is an outdoor omnidirectional J-pole made of copper pipe and coax down to my Sony XDR-F1HD; I had a directional FM antenna but it hasn't held up well to shipping abuse and weather, and is down for repairs/replacement. I have multipath problem in my valley location; HD Radio eliminates multipath but at least one station I'd like to hear is analog and reception is not very good without a directional antenna with gain.

I only listen to three stations. Our local independent station is world-class & our NPR affiliate is also very good, but they're both in Tampa & the other station is the other direction in Sarasota. Not interested in the complexity of a rotor, though I understand that's probably ideal for my situation. . .

Who mentioned upwards of $200!? The Metz branded version is <$50 & lots of folks here & elsewhere seem to love it for an omni that does well, even in an attic. (I have totally been nervous about lightning!!!) Also, if my dipole/TV antenna were getting the job done, I wouldn't be bothering with this thread. ;)
 
Couldn't make up my mind between a Magnum FM1 or an AntennaCraft FM6 ... so I went with both ... <G>

Actually need both. The FM1 gives me killer omni coverage, but the FM6 is aimed directly towards a low power college station that's my favorite and really drags it in. Almost 30 miles across major metro hash, and clean as a whistle day and night. :thmbsp:

Worth a look if you're into that sort of thing. Both are ganged into one feed that comes inside and split to two receivers. I also use a Magnum FM Sleuth indoor amplifier to boost the signal levels.
 
I just looked on Amazon and saw the Metz going for $200 including shipping. Do shop around and get a better price. I just don't think you'll be satisfied with it in your location and it really needs to be high up as possible, meaning in your attic at the least. Metal shingles will kill reception.

sKiZo: Connecting together a directional and omnidirectional antenna kind of defeats the purpose, but I imagine you could get a wealth of stations from the Chicago area and elsewhere.

I used to have a homemade FM preselector/amplifier, and I kind of miss it but don't really need it with my Sony.

Amazon isn't a real source for the Metz, but I understand what you're saying, it's not a great antenna, in your opinion. So, if I'm not interested in a physically large outdoor antenna & might prefer an attic mount, what do you suggest?

The Antennacraft FM-6 and the Channel Master CM-3026 are both relatively compact antennas. The latter especially should fit in many attics.

Alas, there are no physically large FM antennas left on the consumer market. If I want one, I'm going to have to build it.

Every reception location is unique and you'll have to experiment until you get the results you want. I've that learned from experience.

... and yet I realize no loss of signal strength on the vertical omni, yet the horizontal yagi gives me the directional increase required to drag in the low watt station that is it's only target ... go figure.
 
If one is serious about FM, put up a Yagi, log periodic, or other directional antenna for the FM band and a rotator* with 75 ohm downlead and be done with it. The current crop of Yagis is sort of limited in scope (are the Antennacraft FM yagis still available?).

I bought one of these on sale about a year ago but haven't worked up the gumption to erect it. I don't pretend it's a top-end antenna (it seems to be a dipole with a couple of director elements and a reflector) but it should be decent & the price is certainly right. Probably gonna put it in the loft's attic so as to avoid aesthetic unrest with Mrs. H :-)

Another possibility (with which I have no experience myself) would be a so-called J-pole antenna. http://www.pcs-electronics.com/guide_antenna.php (scroll down a bit & there's info on a J-pole on this page) The J-pole design is, I think, typically used for transmitting but of course will work for reception, too.

Ever want to replace that RatShack rotor, they're apparently built by AntennaCraft. Got one of these a while back, and the motor is identical.

I actually have two, one from 2001 and the other from 2008. I got the 2008 one because I got my ExpressVu dish account disabled and went OTA and got all new antenna stuff. So the 2001 one (rusty trusty on the right) is pre-dish and just a backup.

These things although they freeze up when it gets really cold seem pretty indestructible. The bottom panel drops pretty easy and you don't have to unhook or disassemble anything. So this Summer / Fall I'm gonna spray some WD-40 (or suitable alternative) in the mechanism to keep it from freezing / seizing next Winter.

I took a look inside the holes on the bottom of the pre-amp to see if any FM traps were lurking in there but the holes just look like blanks for some other product / model. All I saw was surface mount stuff, nothing tweakable or switchable.

When I was into Amateur Radio Big Time I spent most of my time with HF frequencies, but also dabbled in 2 meter FM Packet. I tried just about every antenna known to humans back then to increase my range on RX and TX. J-Pole, Dipole, Windom, Sloper, Zepp, Vertical, even some experimental designs I dabbled in. I also ported most of these to my FM Tuners as they were available and I decided I wanted to experiment with FM Stereo broadcast RX as well.

My conclusion is that FM is obviously line of sight for the vast majority of the time, and the higher your antenna, the better your reception. Nothing can compete with height AGL. Not even the best amplified antennas. 75' high on a tower or mast beats an amplified antenna in the attic any day with regard to pulling in some weaker signals, assuming your house is not built on a nice hill or mountain.

Today I use three different antennas. J-Pole, Dipole, and Discone. They all work great because they are all specific to my locations and at a height that gives me the RX I want for the stations I want to receive. I don't personally worry too much about selectivity as I don't have that issue with any of my locations, so a highly directional antenna is not important to me. I'd love to be able to pull neighboring islands in Hawaii but unfortunately I have huge volcanic mountains in the way toward both neighboring islands. Both are probably within the horizon azimuth for me to get LOS to the transmitting towers, but I'd have to be up another 1,000 feet to get above the mountains.

I bought it online from a German dealer at a very reasonable price. It's hooked up to a Yaesu G-450C rotator. Good for DXing, and especially fun now that the Sporadic-E season is upon us.

What's the build quality like? I'm disappointed with my Antennacraft FM-6; between Fedex warping it in shipment and five years on the mast, it hasn't held up very well. I wouldn't mind having that Yaesu, either. My ancient Channel Master rotator from the early 80s isn't going to last forever.

Got it for next to nothing as it needed some work after a lightning hit. New bearings and races, dial lamp, top hat switch, and start capacitor, and it's good as new.
 
My rotator setup. I've since put the yagi on top. I know, they interfere, but really there's no safer place to store to combo antenna than on the mast.
