What Have I Got Here Folks? B & O Beogram RX2

I keep hoping B&O will ask Ortofon to start making the carts again. SoundSmith does a great job, but the economies of scale are just murder.

They don't turn up in any better condition than that. You are a lucky duck. If the needle plays ok, I'd leave it alone - the rebuild can cost up to $100.

That's what I like to hear :) I never come across worthy tables around here. I wasn't too sure if this was a decent machine or not as I'm very unfamiliar with B & O gear. It wont displace my DP-62L as my main deck but I'll definitely keep it around. Any idea what their TOTL stuff is as far as TT's go?
 
a lot of audiophiles dont' have any patience for B and O because the parts are so hard to get and you have virtually no choices with the cartridge.

but many real B&O lovers think they are great; indeed they made some very high end stuff back in the day. I agree sometimes the 'design' seems to take precedent over the audio, but hey, they are gorgeous, and not bad sounding either.
 
I'll have to make a temporary spot for it so I can try it out in one of the systems. I set it up on the kitchen counter and played an album side without issue. So far so good.
 
Sleek. And clean! B & O has some of their designs on display at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. So even if it doesn't work, you have a potential piece of sculpture.

Cool. I can set it up outside in a flower bed as a garden decoration :D
It does have quite modern styling. Not really my thing but I do like it.
 
congrats on your B&O TT... looks to be in great condtion. I've owned one before.. it was ok. I loved the looks though. B&O sure knew how to design eye catching stereo gear.
 
I just picked up one of those. The record was scraping, so I had to put more bend in the springs to get the platter back up. Unfortunately it looks like the cartridge mine came with is toast. Which is a bummer, as I don't see myself dropping $150 for a Sound Smith replacement.

Cartridges seem to be the Achilles's Heel with these tables...
 
Great score. I have one. It's going in HT system in LR as it's sort of a show off in a silver Sony stack. Saving pennies to buy cartridge. All functions work, so it's just a few more eBay sales and I'm there (Soundsmith takes PayPal so I'm building up a balance for cartridge :) ).

The anti-skate is not automatic. There is a rotary selector on the bottom or under platter that sets the anti-skate to the cartridge model. The cartridges have different tracking weight requirements. I think they range from 1 to 3 grams, but you need to check with SoundSmith or BeoWorld.

Anyway, under the platter are the suspension lock down screws. and maybe a lube point or two. The comment about killing the power after cueing is correct to set the tracking force. Only way to get the arm into "float". Otherwise, it will be under cueing and logic control.

You sir, are correct! I bought my table a number of years ago on ebay and didn't know that. Thanks for the info!
 
I remember when B&O first hit the stores, I was around 14 I think, my finger prints were all over that **** at Laurel Audio.

All I knew was it looked cooler than hell, still does. I'm just afraid to own it for reasons like the price of cartridges...
 
I had no idea about these tables, let alone the cartridge situation. Good thing the one on mine looks virtually new!
 
Old thread, but a good thread! I had an rx2 for a while. First with the mmc5, then an mmc1, I think? Both needles but the dust, and I might eventually retip them, if I run across a tx2 for the right price.

I'm brand new to audiokarma but have been reading the forums and it seems like the perfect place to get some opinions on what to buy :D I'm looking to purchase a new, high quality turn table for the right price. I'm not looking for top, top of the line, per say, but something much nicer than the random thing I'm using now. A store where I live has these two available… thoughts? Buy the Thorens! It is superior performance wise, and has a wide selection of cartridge options and is upgradable and tweakable to even better than stock. You can even install tonearms in 9" of your choice with an arm board if you desire.
 
If you want it to last a long time without costing you lots more money, get the Thorens. The B&O cartridges are just too expensive to replace and very few people want to work on the mechanisms.
