What I learned on Craigslist

Say or spell it wrong, I don't care, as long as they have what I want.
The more obscure the add, the less chance for competition.

Steve

That it takes somewhere between 9 and 134 emails /calls to set a time and date for a buyer not to show up at.

Plus, putting the line in your ad "if this ad is still up then this item is still for sale" really means "please email me asking if my item is still for sale".

That all happens, but seriously I'd say I actually sell more than 30 but less than 60% of items I post for sale. That includes non audio normal household furniture, tools, etc.

Old = Antique/vintage = $$$$$.

Sorry, 9 times out of 10 old on craigslist (re:vintage/antique) is just that. OLD.
Most times it means GARBAGE.

I've learned that plastic all-in-one walmart steros can be 1,000 watts! WOW!

there's loud steros, then there's LOUD sterios. Just ask the nighbors or cops.

I'm looking to trade for a brand new X-Box, because clearly my crapy item is valuable.(to me)

Any speaker larger then a computer set is; LARGE, TALL, BIG.

This is a double cassette, so it's worth double!

For sale turntable. [should read; Turntable, which I F**ked up trying to play DJ]

what ever he's selling, it's 15in.

Audiophiles!!!!!!!!!!!! Hi End system with everything you would ever need.

I've learnt that there's no need to take the dust off the stuff you're selling before photographing, or even to take the trouble to dig out a proper camera (640x480 from the webcam, Dr. Parkinson as the operator will do), put some light on the object or take care that it's in focus.

"Pioneer receiver $300"

"Dear sir, can you give me the model number?" Translation: I don't know which of 987 Pioneers you're selling - an SX-1980 for a song, or BPC. I would think if you're asking that kind of jack for it, you'd be kind enough to tell us what your actually selling.

Reply: "It is old. You are welcome to come look." Translation: No, I would have to get off my fat butt and look at the back, and I am too lazy.

Very funny. Unfortunately, it happens all the time.

A couple of "gems" that I've learned;

"Sony has never made anything hi-end" (um....OK)

"Oh, they work just like a ported box" (said about a woofer completely devoid of surrounds)

"I prefer to have the bass and treble at 5 o'clock" (huh?)

"You're nuts" (compliment courtesy of a CL buyer upon seeing my listening space)

The 5 o'clock one I get. That means the bass and treble dials are turned all the way to the right. Effect is 'smiley-face' or 'disco' equalization: no middle.

I've learned that I have had the wrong usage of the words "Sale" and "Sell" all these years. Apparently you put things up for sell, and you are then saleing them. Huh, silly me!

Ooh that's one of my favorites...to hate.

LOL!

CL McLessons

When the inquiry is from a name that sounds not right, it is a phishing trick to obtain an Email address for some college in South Carolina's spam mailer filling my email box with return unwanted emails. yeesh.

After giving a prospective buyer the opportunity to try out his not so great tube pre/amp to listen to speakers I am selling, He takes over the living room and plays it all loud as can be, then leaves with a 'they sounded better than I would have thought, -I have an appointment tomorrow for another set out of town'. From this I learned never to invite a stranger into my home to freak out my wife and ruin a perfectly good evening. The cold Garage it is in the future.
live live live, and keep learning!
