What I learned on Craigslist

Ive learned that anything with a silver face worth huge money. This goes for everything, Soundesign, JC Penny, Mongomery Wards, etc.

That if it's Marantz, there are sharks sitting around looking for it who will one up you in any way to get it. Probably McIntosh too, I just don't ever see it listed.

1. If you try to "sale" something...you must wait 3 months minimum for people to start responding to your ad...

2. Phishing emails don't even try anymore.

3. When selling something, expect to be lowballed in person right before the money changes hands. "Hey uh...will you take $20 for it?"

4. All wheels for sale are either exactly what you're looking for but the wrong bolt pattern or exactly what you wanted but you're now broke.

5. "I haven't had the grills off, but they sound great!" = run

6. You almost never find anything good in the free section.

7. A 2 way 8" speaker made in the 80's by Soundesign will "Rattle windows"

I learned that bass needs to 'slap', for the speaker to have economic value. I hope that I can learn what 'slap' actually means. I will continue to read CL adds and keep you posted.

Don't be holdin' ya breath

"Old Skool" = BPC or Technics speakers
Amp for sale = car amplifier
Thumpin' = car amplifier or BPC....
"Big Antique Speakers" = JBL 4343's :)

I don't think they are that bad. I bought quite a few decent stuff off it. The best deal I made was a Mark Levinson Power Amp ML-9 for $750 from a retired gentleman and it is in very good shape, no dent or even scratches or anything. It was left in a box unused for years, not sure how that could happen !!! All I had to do is clean up a bit with Dust Buster and Dioxide.

While you can get one off Ebay, the shipping is outrageous, not to mention all the risk of improper packing and SOLD AS IS.

At least with CL, I could have a demo and decide to buy or not and of course, no shipping and waiting.

But of course, spammers are well known from CL. After a while, you can recognize them by paying attention to the email address and their name. They are way different.

I responded to an add a couple years ago entitled. Home theater equipment. it just said infinity and Sony speakers with no prices. I was expecting crap but gave the guy a call and ended up getting 1 infinity CC-3 center and 4 SM-225 speakers for $45 each. The new SM series from mid 2000. With the audax drivers (not the polycells) and the back ash cabinets.

Oh, the point here isn't to diss CL in general. It's safe to say everyone posting here has stuff to post because they look at CL....

But it's fun to share a chuckle.

that the word 'add' doesn't just mean a mathematical operation, it's now short for 'advertisement' (not sure how the extra 'd' got in there)

I like the CL ads that insult/threaten you before the transaction, going something like: "I know's worth at least twice this becuase my buddy saw a Ebay add for that much, so don't come over and tell and try to tell me it ain't, I'll throw you out LOL"

Yeah, I want to deal with somebody who is ignorant, stupid and potentially violent.

What I have learned on CL:

That MANY people have MANY grandfathers, uncles, aunts, great uncles, great aunts, cousins in the military that have MANY closets (many more closets than the average human being) where great gear has been stored in for many, many years. I wish someone in my family had as many closets as these CL posters so I could go looking in them for a week to find some cool stuff. In my grandfathers ONE closet all I found was a box of golf balls...

I've learned that I have had the wrong usage of the words "Sale" and "Sell" all these years. Apparently you put things up for sell, and you are then saleing them. Huh, silly me!

I can't offer any logical explanation, but whenever I see this, it makes me feel like my head is about to explode. Especially when they get both words wrong in the same post....:uzi:

I learned all the a-holes with "bumpin" car sub woofers driving around my neighborhood probably got them on CL and traded a PS3, ipad or "other cool stuff," for them.

Related to this, I think they should rename it Subslist - because 85% of the electronics section is car subs. I have petitioned Craigslist for the longest time to add a section called Car Audio (being careful not to say Audio - or then I'll have to browse through the idiotic car sub ads all the same to find home audio gear!). We got a Cell phone section, why not car audio? Probably because it would be far less annoying if they had their own section to post in...*sigh*

It's related to accent I think. People who speak with a 'redneck' accent pronounce 'sell,' the verb, sort of like 'sail,' with two distinct sylables. Then 'sale' can get slurred into a single sylable, perhaps to distinguish it from 'sail.' So they spell accordingly.
