What is your perfect speaker?

Ed, that is my problem to many speakers and to few that I like. If I could only keep one I would choose the DB Plus 880. Certainly not a perfect speaker, still I enjoy them more than the rest. I can't wait to get my A/D/S/ 710"s refoamed everyone says they are great. After those two practically anything could go although I will keep all the Polks for the HT.

Agreed -- though mine so far is AN E/SEC Silver and they are more than many a new car.

I have the Wharfedale Vanguards -- which cam after the E90 and E70. The Vanguard is 95db sensitive 3 way (looks similar to the E70). They have more bandwidth though 40hz - 23khz 175watts RMS 8 ohm and more step control on the countours...they also made a dj version with more robus outer casing for taking some hits. They are a blast and have been for the 14 years I've owned them.

I am an apartment dweller and have always had an affinity for small speakers. The speak I'd be happiest with would have forward mids, extended (but not bright) treble, & a tight low end that goes lower than you'd think a bookshelf could go. That being said, I recently purchased a pair of "Blemished" (This means a 1 cm scratch on the bottom of the speak, heh) Revel M20s for $1200 from an authorized dealer. They normally sold for $2000. Harman International just discontinued them & were unloading the blemished ones, I suppose.

Anyway, this speak is just about everything I noted above. It's be closer to my dream speaker if it went a tad lower...but I am not complaining. It is the most pleasing & versatile small speaker I have ever heard. Will play everything from Jazz & Classical to Rock & Metal and sound amazingly good doing so. For a guy who likes small speakers, I guess I found my dream speaker.

My Perfect Speaker

First, let me begin by saying that, like a lot of others of my generation, my ears were subjected to a lot of abuse about 35~40 years ago courtesy of the military. My hearing is not "20/20", so my opinion is biased. I don't much care about specs or what some reviewer thinks. I like what sounds good to me--that should be the final arbiter for all sound systems. Understand that you may not hear what I hear or like what I like. That should be a given..the idea of this hobby is to get your own personal audio nirvana, even if everyone else tells you to turn it down. Right now, on my systems (a Pioneer Elite true separates, and a McIntosh Mac 4100 system) the best speaker I have heard is a JBL L-100. It is old, out of date, etc., but, to my ears, it brings the rest of the system to life. I worried that the Elite needed to be recapped due to low bass response from the Energy 22 Reference Conniesseur or that my Wharfdales on the Mac were too tired. The JBLs have phenomenal bass that makes the old Mac sing while controlling the Elite's inherent brightness in my too lively listening room. From goosebumps on Bizet's Carmen to Cat Stevens' "Moonshadow' bringing nostalgic tears to the eyes, these speakers do the trick. Maybe not for you, but they work for me. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to find the speakers that will do that for you.

Huh...what?! LOL - 17 years in the Artillery has played a number on my hearing. :D

tough decision

for flatout concert-like sound I'd go with my Teledyne AR9's....but, A huge consideration has to be given to the IMF TLS 50. An incredible sounding speaker! :thmbsp:

I've never heard the AR 9's, but I love the 70's AR sound. I have the 3a's and they are perfect for classical music and acoustic jazz.

My favorite that I own are my Paradigm Eclipse BP. I have not heard anything in a similar price range that can produce the sound stage and bass these things can. As far as what I wish for that could take a good couple of days to list..

If you feel that the mid frequency is the essence in music try the Dahlquist DQ10s.
Cheers,

As always, I'm the Norman Lab advocate. My current Model 10a's are wonderful, but I'd trade 'em for my old pair of 431's in a heartbeat!

Perfect is a tough call

Here's a list of speakers I've either owned, reviewed for SoundStage! or sold in my shop.

EPI 150; *Braun L710; *DCM Time Windows; *Spendor SP1; Mirage M3si (yechh!); Monitor Audio Studio 6; JM Labs Micron Karat, Daline 3.1; Silverline SR11, SR15, *SR17, Panatella, Panatella II, Sonata, *Sonatina; Nova Ovation (blah!), *Shamrock Eire, Loth X BS-1, Amaze, Lamhorn w/AER; Galante Rhapsody; Equation 7, 15; SAP Trio, Quartet; JM Reynaud- *Twin MkII, Trente, Offrande; Klipsch KG4, Heresy, Heresy 2, Belle, *K-horn, Shahinian Obelisk (current model), *Harbeth C72ES, Omega Super 3 Alnico, Tannoy D500, and finally OHM Micro, Walsh 100 Mk2. I've also visited CES and the SP shows on several occasions and had the chance to hear lots of the mega-buck stuff. (*denotes an exceptional speaker)

Out of that group, I'd have to go with the Ohm Walsh speakers. They possess the midrange linearity of full-range drivers but also have low excellent frequency extension and can perform all genres of music very well.

Apogee Scintilla's without a doubt. Right now I have homemade 2-way "monitors" that are so far the best I've ever done. Dyn d-260 tweets, Morel MU 621 woofers, mated to a velodyne ct-120 sub. I also have a pair of Apogee Duetta II's that are being restored and when those are up, OH BOY! :) Oh BTW first post here Hi all!

i would go with some old ev"s i seen a pair go for $7.500 on ebay i wanted them so badly but didnt have the cash they were huge the guy said 600 dollars to ship in the us i would have liked to see what these things went for new and in a close second jbl heritage went for i think $4.500 i like the big money speakers in case if u couldnt tell

My choice would be what I have.

Altec Santiagos w/ Dalhquest dq10s piggybacked, hooked in par, and bi-amped.

If I had to choose others it would be the Altec 19s
