What modern things do you hate/dislike?

How do you feel about the person using the self checkout line who is talking on the phone with one hand and checking out with the other.
The second part of my pet peeve is 15 cash registers with only two cashiers but all the self checkout are open, but there’s a bunch of people waiting because everybody is so efficient at checking out.

Big supermarkets are one of my biggest turn-offs in life. For many, many reasons. :mad:

Too small! I see this everywhere in Arizona. Someone at the DOT heard "roundabout" and without learning how they really work, started installing these very small diameter roundabouts everywhere for no damn reason. A small roundabout is dangerous and cancels all benefits that a roundabout should bring. These small roundabouts - like 75 foot radius - are very dangerous - there is no room, or distance to maneuver - which is the entire point of a roundabout.

I will say, I'm not the biggest fan of roundabouts- but, at least the GA DOT has the sense to make them big enough. I've seen them in locations out in the countryside, where you almost could put up bleachers and play a football game in the inner circle.

And even in the cities, they're usually 200 feet across (diameter). The only exception is tight residential areas- where the speed limits are very low, and trucks are already not allowed, anyway- some of those can be smaller...

In Romania, where a lot of people are paying cash - about 40-50% of the buyers - I Guess in U.K, Spain, France, Italy, Germany is the same,
some hypermarkets put only just a few self-check out machines that accept also cash. If 1, or even 2 of them don't work, it's a mess. They ignore the realityt.
Some supermakets have only electronic payment self check out ones. Pain in the brain for both the shoppers and the employees.

We have one store chain here that has card only self checkout. There are six self checkout stations. And they have two lines open with cashiers.

This arrangement works out well for most. The only downside is when you are buying beer. A cashier who oversees this section has to come over and approve the sale. Even still, this is faster than waiting in line.
 
Very unfortunate. Basically Meta allows people to use images from public Instagram accounts to create AI images. Of course, it is an opt out feature, meaning you are automatically opted in.
Even if you opt out, audio and texts can still be used.
 
Modern things I hate ==> User interfaces that get worse and worse over time. Zillow was a "perfect" app / website when it came out 20+ years ago -- I used it extensively to search for houses at the time and it was like a miracle -- all of the information was easily accessible and it was super easy to find houses as you drove around, or explore the neighborhood on Zillow to guide you, see price history, tax history, etc. Each time I've used Zillow since then, it's seems like the interface just gets worse and worse. It's harder to find the information you are looking for, to browse the area, etc. It seems like the info, once you do find it, is in different areas for different listings. My brother shares the same sentiments about Zillow and he uses it far more than I do.

On eBay -- things like a sellers ratings are really hard to see any thing -- you have to "switch back to classic view" to see anything useful. Same with the seller's page -- god help you if you opt into the new version, because it takes a while to figure out how to switch back and the new version is impossible to use.

These are only 2 examples, but I find a lot of user interfaces that go backwards in terms of usability.

You must be talking about ebay, when viewed in a browser. I have been looking at items on eBay with their iOS app since the iPhone 3. It has remained fairly consistent.

Zillow? That is another phone app for me.
 
I don't mind circles, but too-small ones are annoying. I do wish people would learn to use the things. They are safer than a 4 way and more efficient but at some point it seems that no matter how safe we make intersections and roads, drivers are determined to keep up those accident rates anyway by paying even less attention.
 
Designer dogs! We used to call them mutts or mixed-breed.
Even the guy that first crossed two purebred dogs to make a labradoodle hates what he unleashed.

I also hate that the squirrels eat all my garden veggies. OK, maybe not a modern invention.

No expert here, but it feels like there are way too many dogs living in kennels and dog pounds. Probably from too much breeding for profit. Dogs probably have a better deal than chickens, pigs, chimps, and cattle though. The domestication of the Dog is a marvelous wonder of nature. I hope we don't abuse the gift.

A long time ago, a guy at work was talking about how he took his daughters to see The101 Dalmatians. This was the 1996 remake. Anyhow, they wanted to go to a breeder and look at some, and sure enough, they bought two pups.

People told him that Dalmatians can be very feisty and hard to raise (he had never owned a dog before). Sure enough, the two were ruining the new house.

So he told everyone at break, "I couldn't handle them anymore, so I took them out to the desert and left them there."

He said it so nonchalantly, I couldn't believe it. I own dogs, so it was really hard to hear.

It took years to talk to that guy again.
 
ugh, the -doodle and -poo and whatever other nonsense things. Yeah used to just be mixed breed / mutt / whatever. If it wasn't a purebred, it was just a dog. The random mixed breeds tend to be pretty good animals health-wise, they don't have all those recessive traits from inbreeding that cause the problems.

I understand that sometimes giving the animal up is the only thing that can be done, but abandoning them out in the desert or on the side of the road is unconscionable.

I've had a bunch of rescue dogs over the years, saves from shelters, ex-breeder dogs that had their share of litters, a couple of senior dogs, even a couple that were abandoned on the road. Have fostered a few too, one of the senior guys was with us until he passed a couple years later. Currently have 3, and I really don't see myself ever getting a puppy from a breeder just because there are so many that need a home. The problem with rescues is sometimes you end up with an absolute head case from whatever happened to them previously.
