All Bark, No Bite!
Stores I visit that ALWAYS ask for phone number: Ace, True Value, Harbor Frieght, NAPA, Oreilly, Autozone. Probably some others that I don't visit often. No one in a store front asks me those questions. Ace Hardware does ask for my ph#, but that has to with their rewards program. But I don’t mind giving out my cell number. My phone has a call blocker, and unless you are in my contacts, my phone never rings.
I've always assumed that they don't ask because they want to call me or text me, but rather the phone number is a unique IDENTIFIER. They can use it to acquire a profile from one or more of the thousands of data brokers that sell your info. Alternatively, maybe the store is selling that transaction information TO the data brokers?
When asked, I reply with, "Why would you want my phone number"?
