Hey guys, just picked up a 4070 and was wondering which tuner is the match for this unit?
What tuner goes with the 4070?

The 104 or 105 perhaps? They're 14-1/4" wide like the 4070 and were made during its run. Seems like most other separates from that era, including the more powerful quad amps, were 15-3/8" wide.
PS, Every time I see a post about the 4070 my heart skips a beat as I briefly confuse it with the 4170. I think if it were anything other than a misprint in an old Marantz brochure or a red herring on Classic Audio, one would have surfaced by now, but you never know... It should have existed though! The 4400 needed a separates counterpart.

From my recollection the input is both 2-channel and 4-channel, but please correct me if I'm wrong cause it's been years. So, you can put any high end top of the line unit that satisfies your needs. What that unit does is takes a great out put source like the monster receiver SX-1980 and makes the sound better by making it quadraphonic in a big way then match it up with four killer tower speaker and I'm not talking about party speakers either. But, your listening space needs to be able to be spacious enough to attain the proper effect. A system like that has a real WOW effect if attention to detail is considered.

I believe you're perhaps thinking of the 2440 quad decoder / synthesizer? It was designed to be used in conjunction with a 2ch amp to "quadify" the output, and included it's own (low power) rear-channel amplifier.
The 4070 (and the 4170, which no one's buddy ever had because it didn't exist despite my protestations to the contrary) is an integrated quad amp. You could put an SX-1980 in front of one to use as a pre / tuner, and the 4070 could simulate quad using Varimatrix or decode an SQ source (assuming you have a module), but you wouldn't be using the 1980's sweet amplifier at all. IMO, that would kind of be like towing a Ducati around behind your Civic just because it has 4 wheels instead of 2

You do have a point....
But, in the greater San Fransisco Area because of the pyschodelic music scene quadraphonic was a big thing and people would do anything to have that sound. So pretty much was possible for a group of people with a high amount of disposable income. This was a place people would travel to buy stereo equipment and visit all the different record stores that were having price wars. When I was in high school, the point was socially who did not have a car or a stereo. Yes, to be a teenager and be allowed in the Filmore East during the week nights cause they didn't serve alcohol is another Frisco secret. We don't all live the same experience....
