What was your first car?

I remember a high school kid who put a souped-up 2-liter Type IV VW engine into his stripped-down Bug. The more powerful and larger engine made the car handle weirdly. There was tons of understeer, as the front end had zero weight.
 
The very first car that I owned (not driving the family car) was in 1966. It was a 1958 Chevy Impala convertible, which was also the first year of the Impala model. I paid $400 for it. All GM brand cars in 1958 were a one-year design only.

1967 MGBGT. My first car (one like it, but mine doesn’t have knock-off wire wheels): white, red interior. It’s been stored in my parents’ garage for nearly 40 years. (Actually, sadly, finally have to sell it this summer.)

But I drove a lot of my parents’ cars (or hand-me-downs) before I bought the MG in 1979: Pinto, Impala, Barracuda, Fury, Valiant, Fiat X19, Ford pickup, LeBaron…

Had a chance to buy one for $1500 back when we were young.

1961 silvery-blue Plymouth Valiant (pictured here but not the actual one we owned), handed down from our grandmother, was the first car my brother and I could call our own. We were embarrassed to drive it—with its fins—in the mid-1970s. (My older brother, with his new 1972 Mach-I Mustang laughed at us.) We pasted a shark sticker on the side and called it “The Shark” to distinguish it from all of our family’s other vehicles. Love that car now. Amazing how stupid we were then…

Some cool cars in this thread! :thumbsup: Wish I could say my first car was vintage or interesting, but instead it was a 1991 Dodge Spirit, a glorified K-car, finished in "champagne gold" (aka beige). Base trim, but with a 3.0L Mitsubishi V6 under the hood which gave it some pep; I discovered that it vibrated like a jackhammer if my lead foot dared take it up to 95MPH! :eek: It suffered a variety of indignities at the hands of a first-time driver, but took them with minimal repairs, even when I thought the "A-Sick-Oh-Four" transmission was on its way out (turned out to be bad motor mounts). Here's a lousy photo of it after it was (almost literally) "put out to pasture" behind our garage, showing its various "love dents" (and a set of Mercury Tracer hubcaps):
