What's my boggle with phono preamps?

One of the members here is testing the MM version of the Pyxi and has a DL MP7 pre and he states he prefers the Pyxi over it . It will soon come to me for testing as well. Im surprised no one else took up the invite to test it, oh well.

Id like to hear a DL as well just to satisfy my curiosity vs the DIY pre I have that the Pyxi is based on .

Before the DIY Wyn i only used built in phono stages , mostly Yamaha pros and integrated's and a Creek MM , OBH something or another. My DIY really sounds better than all, closes was the Yamaha's A-1 phono stage but that was so long ago I would need to test it again to be sure .

i believe theres only one version of the pyxi—the pyxi. AFAIK the factory made version of the wyn palmer DIY phono hasnt gone into production yet and is on hold.
 
I played around today using one table with a Nagaoka MP-200 installed on both the Mp-7 and the Pyxi. Back and forth I went using Dire Straits Brothers In Arms (RL Masterdisk) version. If I had to pick one over the other I'd go with the Darlington. To me it slightly edges out the Sota. I don't have the "words" reviewers use, I just shut my eyes and listen. The MP-7 wins, for me.
I'm in the process of simplifying and am going down to one table. I just ordered a "gasp" new Technics and will run it with the MP-7.

im floored. wherever phono amps anonymous is, im not ready to walk thru them doors just yet!

Sota i contemplating a MM vision only . I guess many have asked for them to do this, so they made one and Wyn had a thread here about people who may want to test it .

Every one hears differently . And tastes change even over a few weeks of days.

@lsipes1965 Also has the DL MP7, he prefers the Pyxi, but who knows that may change over time.

Did you try messaging Andrew on AK? I've communicated with him quite a bit and he has always been quite quick to respond and helpful. I have a "hot" tube preamp and his attenuators are a perfect solution to get more range on my volume knob.
 
One advantage I see with he Pyxi is it does MC while the MP7 does not. Also the pyxi has loading options.

Also to the OP, did you try the different load settings with the Pyxi at whilst switching back and forth? Just curios if things were set up evenly.

”prefers” might be exaggerating:) If money was really tight, I’d rec the PyxiII(not in production) just because I could tell no real difference between the 2. And the PyxiII is more flexible. The 35db gain stage was more than adequate for higher output Grados. It’s a Gem. So is the MP7. I wanted to see what the 45db gain would do for a 1Mv out Grado I’ve got……not enough juice. Ned Clayton SUT came to fix that.
 
@lsipes1965 - I think I want a headamp for use with -low- output Grado carts, not high output.. I also have two different Ned Clayton SUTs, one of which may work well with a 1mV output - but like Grado told me, why put all that coil wire back in, when they removed it from the signal path for better clarity? I don’t know how nice the MP7 phono pre is, but their SU7 headamp may be just what I want..
