What's Your BEST Score $$ ??

My best deals so far have been on musical instruments:

A 1966 Fender Princeton Reverb Black Face for $35 - private sale (way back when)

A 1966 Mosrite Ventures II for $200 - small town flea market (fairly recently)

The best part was the the wife was with me when I bought the Mosrite - she thought I was crazy as a rat in a coffee can, until some other guy at the flea market had a book that listed it as worth like $1800....

:D

Several.
One example.
New-in-box JBL 5674 Diamond Quad Array Cinema subs, 330 lbs apiece, direct from JBL Pro, loaded with four new JBL 2226H woofers (retail around $400 each just for the drivers) and shipped free to Ohio from California, for $212 apiece. Bought both of them.
Though of selling woofers to recoup other $, ending up keeping it all. True story.
You can see them on here http://www.jblpro.com/installations/installs_cinema.html
in a couple of shots; they are the big 4 woofer cabinets under the horns.......

Best score by far. An old Altec corner speaker I bought for $40. Had seen it a week earler, and had not bought it then.. :sigh:

Started looking up Altecs on the net.... OMG!

Called lady about speakers but got no answer, so left message. Two days later she calls me and tells me they are still there if I want them.

Quick trip to her house and put the old ugly speaker in my buddies truck.

Opened the cabnits up, NO Altecs....... Instead a 15" Tannoy Black Dual concentric speaker with Tannoy crossover. GREAT SHAPE! Sold recently on E-bay to a very happy South Korean gentleman for $7700! I still shake a little at what almost got away. :D

My best was probably the Minty Thorens TD-124 for 25 bucks at a junk shop. I was afraid the owner was going to get wise when I started to drool and babble about how much I wanted it.
Though,my favorite score was my littel bogen DB-10A for 5 bucks. Out of that I gained a new hobby and a whole bunch of new friends :D However, I would trade any 2 of ya for 7,700 bucks

NO KIDDING! What a score, inspiration to keep pressing on! Reminds me of the Belle's in my first example, just too big for anyone to mess with so they sat all day at $50.

I've had a few get away the same way, asleep at the switch, but never missing out on quite such a hit ($7700).

I'll keep trying though. :lmao:

My best scores:
Non-vintage- Pioneer Elite PDR-99 Compact Disc Recorder (no remote) $10 @ church rummage sale

Vintage- Marantz 2285B receiver (VG+) w/wood case (Good), Ohm C2 speakers (cosmetic Good -now need refoaming), Hitachi TT (VG) and Hitachi 3-head cassette deck (died when I hit play) $15 @ yard sale

Vintage runner-up- McIntosh MC-2505 power amp (Good) w/wood case (VG) $50 classified ad in local paper

If ya'all are bragging about buying something for $5 or whatever, that's cool, but adding the 'I sold it for $5000', while that's a nice windfall, you're missing the whole point of this hobby, which has nothing to do with profitting.

We had a thread from way back about this, and the overall consensus was that, while a $5 score of a valuable piece is always way cool, if you plan on selling later for a megabuck profit, you will certainly be shooting yourself in the foot if you come here and brag about it. ;)

Then again, I'm just jealous because I never run across deals like those!!!!

:D

Just received a Sony ST-S550ES tuner that got here for $25. Just before that I got a Sony ST-J75 tuner for delivered for $37. Not sure how I fell into these, but am happy that I did. Only thing better than great gear is cheap great gear.

Hey Echo, I hear you and agree to a point. My big sale was a couple months ago and I had intended on keeping my mouth shut. I collect Vintage gear because I love music and can get great audio for cheap prices. Items like the (one) Tannoy speaker are beyond my ability to pair up with a matching unit and equivelent equipment. As many here do, I move out gear as my inventory grows and as I get something I like better. Ebay pays not only for an occational toy for me, but for grocercys and other such fun things for my family. Most things I buy I don't want to sell. I usually do sell most because my familys finaces come before my hoard of vintage lust. :) I did not mean to brag or to "shoot my self in the foot". I just got caught up in the Great Score frenzy. Anywho, best wishes to all in our eternal quest for great finds! :D

I started collecting both for my love of the music/equipment and the thrill of the hunt for a bargain. I continually justify more purchases by saying I'll sell some of my finds. But to date, I've yet to sell anything. I've got setups in 5 rooms in the house, a setup in each of two summer cabins, and a basement full of pinch-hitters. Someday soon, I've got to start to sell the overflow.

It caused the bug to bite again....

when my stepmother-in-law took me into her living room as she was preparing to move to her retirement home and asked if I wanted the large walnut console she had had since 1964. Frankly, I had never noticed it as a console and thought it was a large liquor cabinet.

Imagine my surprise when I got all the flowers and dust cloth off to find a Mac MX-110 tuner/preamp and a Mac MC-225 tucked away underneath. The speakers were all JBL and the turntable was an Elac 50H! The only catch was that I had to take all of it or nothing at all.

So, for the cost of another trip down to the in-laws in my truck, I got the whole thing. As I write this, I listen to the MX-110 and have gotten another MC-225 with I'll run with the original strapped as monoblocks into a set of Quads.

Prior to all this, I hadn't worked on a piece of audio gear in well over 15 years. So, I suppose I can blame it on my mother-in-law!

Cheers,

David

My 5050 was 9.00 with BiC Venturi Formula 2s and was the easiest mod I've ever had. The 7070 cost 8.80, and my 10" two-way I built was a $3.30 roundup plus .25 for a tweeter and the box was in the roundup plus the 10" came out one of the Altec cabs in the roundup as did the insulation. Almost self-contained :D

I saw a pair of KEF C40's arrive at the Thrift while I was there looking for other things. I had NO idea what they were, had never heard of KEF before. I checked them out and was impressed by the build quality and the mint condition they were in. I offered the desk-guy $25 for the pair and walked out happy. I knew I had a set of speakers that would jam pretty good. Once I got home and searched the net for info, I was super happy. After I hooked them up, I was beyond even that. A great set of big speakers for $25!

I buy for MYSELF first, and I'm not trying to figure what can I sell normally, unless someone has asked me to look for them. Occasionally finding a low priced item and scoring beyond your own wildest dreams is great, but fruitless if you were pushing it unreasonably. If the party comes up and MAKES THE OFFER, shoot! Market acceptance is market acceptance.

If you are trying to float to pay the man, you should be upfront but not groveling for sympathy or brownie points. Everyone understands, broke, out of work, girlriend static, etc.

A lot of people see the sales factor here and don't understand we are a webgroup with classifieds not the other way around  Selling should be the last thing any of of wants to do unless we wish to try new things or help other share the joy we had once with our gear.
