What's Your BEST Score $$ ??

Double Stacking

bolly said:
What a flippin' score! :thmbsp: surfdoc37, I ran 2pair HPM-100's for about 6 months as my mains. Had them double-stacked.

I'm thinking a set may work it's way into my double stack, will have to see, er..., hear :hdphones: . I do still have the HPM 1500's that need the foams, so those may barge their way in once complete. The guy I bought from had a set of JBL L100's for his studio mix, they were fairly impressive at that. I need to get another set of Klipsch or M&K's back in my system to rekindle my memory, wish I'd had more room today.

I just sent the M&K sub that I've moved into HT service down to MK who is going to replace the entire works with NEW technology and MORE POWER, all because they can no longer get the parts for my ailing 1979 amped sub! Mine's the first they've switched over, I told them to experiment all they wanted on it. Seems that last year I got one of the remaining dual voice coil 12" woofs that they had in existence when mine needed foams; all gone now. It will hit the Bay once the rest is back and running; MK let me keep it and the amp parts to lighten the shipping load. Nice guys-- :lmao:

For me, it was an almost find. Where my brother and his wife live, people don't know what they are throwing out. My brother passed up a Marantz 2325. What a mistake.

There is a 22 or 23 series Marantz at the auction house RIGHT NOW ( minus two knobs and the balance slider knob) and so I have decided to fix the SCOTT RS 1000 for myself and help her get that and the good pair of Realistics (woofer and two eaqually sized tweeters--not paper I think and NOT RIPPED) to finish her system : ) I'm going back to listen and check it out on Monday, and hopefully I'll get her over there to have her listen herself this time. She and her husband trust me to come up with these kinds of things.

My best was just last night, picked up from the curb a Yamaha CR 800- Dual 1214 TT, Pioneer CT F650 Tapedeck, and a pair of Advance speakers( not sure about these as I have never heard of them....) but the rest of the gear is in mint shape, looks like its been put away for a long time, no scratches or anything, very happy with my haul!!!!!

My best deals to date:
Pioneer HPM-100s near mint for $20/pair
B&W DM14 near mint for $2/pair
Bought at the same flea market one year apart...

If ya'all are bragging about buying something for $5 or whatever, that's cool, but adding the 'I sold it for $5000', while that's a nice windfall, you're missing the whole point of this hobby, which has nothing to do with profitting.

We had a thread from way back about this, and the overall consensus was that, while a $5 score of a valuable piece is always way cool, if you plan on selling later for a megabuck profit, you will certainly be shooting yourself in the foot if you come here and brag about it. ;)

Then again, I'm just jealous because I never run across deals like those!!!!

:D

I don't know. I think the "whole point" is to have a good time. I sell stuff from time to time. I made a bunch of money on a surround processor that I found for $5.00. Used the money I made to buy my Nikko Alpha 230. If I couldn't do that, my wife wouln't put up with all the gear in the house. I'm pretty close to even on my gear. In other words, I have nothing invested in it. For me, that's fun. For others, it's getting that last 10 percent that I'll probably never hear in my gear. If you enjoy knowing that you have a really nice set up that few can match, that's fun for you. For others, preserving some of the history of audio is fun in it's self. If you like that, it's fun for you, even if it doesn't sound quite as good as something else. Room for all. That's part of the fun!

Oh! I just thought of it! My best score was a pair of KLH Sixes that I found in the garbage. Amazingly good condition! And yes, I did end up selling them.

From the time I got into this several months ago I have accumulated a number of quality pieces and some mistakes. I sold two TT's, a tuner, and a plastic Pioneer a friend tossed out at a little profit. Fortunately (or is it cosmic Karma?), I was able to "score:
Sansui 9090DB- $10.00
Yamaha CR1020+JBL L-112's/misc.- $40.00
Heathkit AJ1510 Tuner-$5.00
Revox A77 RtR+Tapes- $10.00
Infinty 2500's- $5.00
Kenwood 4200+KLH 32's- $10.00
Sansui 221+KLH(?)- $5.00
Pioneer PL-31D- $5.00
Marantz 2230 (Also one with probs)- Free
JBL L100's- Free
Altec Santana II's- Free.
These along with other purchases (good and bad) and refoam kits leave me a little under the break even point. Scores are great, profit is great but, when you keep the better pieces it takes a long time or the sale of a great find to break even or better. That is up to the individual and maybe helps define what a "score" is. And, I've come to find, one may be right around the corner.

hmmmm...

SX-950 for $7 at a garage sale

Marantz TT2000 w/ original box, and some crappy speakers $15 from another garage sale.

the Luxman 600 was free, as were the Celestion Ditton 22's that came with it.

some sony BPC tape deck pulled from the curb. There were a couple of amps there, nothing too exciting, but I regret not grabbing them anyway.

I have to agree. If you're only in it to make a buck, that's a different story. But selling something for a nice profit so you can afford something you desire even more is legit. Especially if the gear you get rid of is still well respected and maintained. That's the kind of person I'd rather buy gear from, rather than some unknown E-Bay profiteer. And the extreme case of rapidly accumulating and NEVER selling, swapping or giving away amounts to gear hoarding, IMO. Spread the joy! :D

BEST SCORE ..newly found gear

My best score would have to be a day less then a week ago ...i placed and add on a local free web site(everything on site is free) asking if anyone had vintage stereo equipment ...with in 48 hours a lady responded saying her husband left her a year ago and has not been back for his stereo and if i wanted it ...i could come and pic it up.
to make a long story short ...when i pulled up at the house i could see in the garage were a large stack of stereo equipment , she said to me "take it all please "
i filled my car top to bottom front to back with a pair of:
pair= poineer HPM-100s speakers
pair = fisher ST415 speakers
pair = KLH speakers (no id tags)
poineer SA-9800 amp
luxman t-400 tuner
kenwood kd-291 r turntable
cables , wires,

i cleaned the pots and switches and so far & have had no other problems ....guess i got lucky on this find ...good luck in your search ..they are out there Ken p
