What's your favorite opening notes?

You put a new LP (or CD for kiddos) on for the first time. Side One, Track One. You watch the needle drop into the lead-in groove. You hear a little surface noise, and then.... WHAM-O!

My all time fav, immortalized much later (and used in the same way) in the movie "High-Fidelity", the five guitar chords to end all time...

What's yours? Not "the best", but your favorite. Side One, Track One, opening few notes/chords/bars.

Badfinger "Baby Blue" or "No Matter What"
Thin Lizzy "The Boys Are Back in Town" or "Jailbreak"

I have plenty of others, but those four are among my faves. :thmbsp:

The faint, menacing 5/4 groove of Gustav Holst's MARS, THE BRINGER OF WAR.

The explosive first organ chord of JERUSELUM on ELP's Brain Salad Surgery

The synthesized "monster voice" and massive guitar/Hammond downbeat of BLACK BLADE on BOC's album Cultasaurus Erectus.

As Quint said, there are plenty of others but those leap to mind at the moment.

For sheer smash and grab (even though it's been played to death)? AC-DC - Back in Black - The twin guitar + bass E-Major/D-Major/A Major progression is just about as good as it gets for pure Rock & Roll.

For absolutely perfect beginning to a Rock & Roll/Pop song - Dion - "The Wanderer"

Breaking the rules here as it's not the actually beginning of the song, but the choral entrance to The Beach Boys "Help Me Rhonda" is fantastic.

One of my very favorite beginnings is the piano at the beginning of Billy Joel's "Piano Man". It's not the first tune on the LP but it sure is a great beginning.

In a slightly (;)) different vein, the guitar at the beginning of Metallica's "Fade to Black" is way cool.

The mini-symphony at the beginning of the Beach Boys' "California Girls" is up there.

The Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil" also gets you going with those devilish drums.

The strummed guitar at the beginning of "Don't Panic," the first track on Coldplay's Parachutes always grabs me and sets the mood for the album.

And the chorus at the beginning of "Love's In Need Of Love Today" at the beginning of Songs In The Key of Life by Stevie Wonder lets me know I'm in for a treat.

I can think of several but I'll go with the following two:

1.) "Purple Haze" by Jimi Hendrix

2.) The jet plane landing on the Beatles' "Back In The USSR"

The Who-Pinball Wizard
Rush-Tom Sawyer
Mountain-Mississippi Queen
Pink Floyd-Hey You

and on, and on...:music:
