When AK members - friends - silently disappear

@satellite65, I've been looking for any word on @markthefixer as well. Seems none here who may have had a direct line to him have had anything further to say, and he's been MIA for several months now. Based on what he had posted himself regarding his situation and condition, things didn't sound very promising to me, unfortunately. I didn't know him personally, nor do I have any contact info for him. But I often found his posts to be quite valuable, and he was a long time member here who made many worthy contributions to the collective knowledge base.

There has been a noticeable falloff in participation of many long time, once prolific AK members due to age and health (and, ultimately, mortality) catching up with them over the last 3-4 years, at least to my perception. A smaller subset have departed for other reasons (ongoing disagreements with other members, loss of interest, bans, etc.). This is all an inevitable evolution of the active membership here, especially considering how long AK has been around now. Still, it's not easy to see long time regulars fall away.

It hurts even more when a Member of the Year disappears. markthefixer is 2008 Member of the Year

Hints and rumors recently...

Anyone know anything about Catrafter?

Paging @Catrafter GS

Enjoy,
Rich P
Hi Rich,

Unfortunately, the rumors are true. Catrafter was my grandfather, and he passed away from complications related to cancer last year. He was a tough old man, but after losing my grandmother, I think a part of him was gone too. He passed away just a few weeks after she did.

Please feel free to message me if there's any information you need to add him to the memorial wall. I'd be happy to help in any way I can.

Thank you for hosting the memorial. It means a great deal to me, and I'm sure it means just as much to the other families who have lost their loved ones. Knowing he'll be remembered by a community he cared so much about is a real comfort to me and my family.

Best,
Catrafter’s Grandson

Thanks for this! Tom was a personal friend and we would talk on the phone here and there. We had a lot of similarities in our backgrounds. Years ago, being a well respected Marantz tech, he was overloaded with work and checked me out to be able to recommend someone else to refer jobs too. With that, I became overloaded as well! I'm currently trying to close out my queue and "retire" retire so I'm not seeking any work - just wanted to honor Tom for providing me work. MANY of us miss him and his advice.

Tom has been added to our Memorial Wall. He was well loved here, and has been sorely missed.

May Tom's memory always be for a blessing.

It is with great sadness that I have to report the sudden death of @sansui au719 - Tony, he died from a massive stroke yesterday, I received the news from his wife a few minutes ago.

I restored several amplifiers for him, including the somewhat famous AU-719 he owned that was part of his username.

He was a good friend, I shall miss him very much.

I am still processing the shock of this terrible news.

Well, I joined AK in July 2005, at a time when audio forums were kind of new and exciting, and it sure helped me getting rid of my obssession for audio related magazines.
I participated actively for a few years, and then gradually moved on to other things. The audio bug never left me, so occasionally I would come back , but to be honest feeling less and less at home while perusing the site due to its ever increasing size. What was cosy and comfortable in the begginning became stranger and colder every time I came by.

Browsing through the different forums, I do bump into some familiar names, though, and some nostalgia sets in. Some of the "oldtimers" are now moderators, which is kind of reassuring.
Great to see you Jorge! Please, don't be such a stranger!

Thanks for the heads up, Scott. Hope you`re doing well.
It´s really nice to see you remembered my name.
As it so happens I also remembered yours, as I remember a few first names of other old timers with whom I kept very pleasant and positive relation(friend)ships throughout my initial stay here at Audiokarma.

So sorry to read this. Tom was a super nice guy and a real treasure for the AK community. He restored a Marantz 2245 for me more than 10 years ago, and was just a pleasure to talk with.

May he rest in peace.
