When to replace old (Classic) equipment

How small are we talking about? My LEs have 6.5 inch woofers and they have plenty of bass.

my ears are used to the 12 inchers that really rumble IMHO ( especially Led Zep but even Miles Davis sounds better when I did a A to B test with my old vintage Speakerlabs vs the AE`s I was using)..but again maybe if I would have aded a sub to the AE`s.. but no space!

Depends on the implementation. I've heard old 12" drivers have no bass, or plenty of it. I've heard modern Totem Forests with a 6.5" woofer that had more impressive bass than almost any reasonably sized vintage speaker I can think of. Of course, once you leave 'reasonably' sized, things can get interesting. The vintage Cabasse and Diatone speakers I have here with 12" drivers have similar bass extension as the Harbeth Compact 7 with its 8" driver. The Harbeths are much more refined with better dynamic ability (and contrast), at least than the Diatones and all the other vintage boxes that didn't last here. The Cabasses hold up pretty well. They sound pretty modern, actually.
