It's really sad that prices at fast food places were going higher even before the recent mess of price hikes. When you drive somewhere burning expensive gas and you get a lukewarm meal that wouldn't be good even if it was hot. The other day I was jonesing for a good burger. Went out of my way to hit Steak N Shake. I grew up 30 miles from where their first store was. Grew up with them as did my kids. Luckily the one we have here is very well run. Got a double cheeseburger, coke, cup of chilli for less than ten bucks. That won't happen at the other fast food places around here. The pickles, lettuce and onions were crisp fresh. The burger and chilli both hot and it's that way everytime I go there. Don't know why I even bother going anywhere else for a burger. On a hot day the real ice cream shakes are a wonderful treat.

In & Out is still a nice deal. The wife wont go anywhere else anyway lol
 
It's terrible. $4.50 per gallon gas to go buy a Whopper meal for $15.

Today I went to the grocery store and NY Strip steaks were $25 each. I didn't buy any.

Needless to say, I've been eating more chicken & pork lately. It's even higher than it was a few months ago though.
 
In Nairobi I get my beef burgers -- typically two beef patties + one slice melted cheese + minced onions ala McDonald's circa 1960's -- from a local joint called Smash. Smash also offer choice of "standard", brioche or potato flour bun. I always take the potato bun(s). I rarely take them in person lately rather courier delivery and they are hot/fresh every time (so far).

There was a small one off burger place in Lincoln IL. called ShortStop. Sad when they closed. First time for a potato bun. Use to hit that place whenever we in Lincoln.

Another midwest chain burger place that was bought out by Hardees was Sandy's. Their Big Scott burger was was the first burger I ever had that had a slaw topping. Just a great burger. Even have the recipe for the that slaw topping. Sandy's also had great shakes.

Kroger sends coupons in the mail and one is 2.50 off for Black Label Select. I get the top sirloin. It 12 bucks and very reasonable with the 2.50 off. They had 5 1/2" pork chops for 5 bucks the other day

Almost everywhere we go now, a little lunch is $17 bucks. It wasn't long ago that it was $10 bucks to get a sandwich or a burger or a big salad at a casual restaurant/diner/fast food. Now, the same burger is $16.99.

Wha-happened? You know? It feels like it happened over night.

Yesterday, coming home in the RV, I paid $5.68 for 91 Octane top tier gas at Chevron.

That's where I was shopping. I like their meat department and they have nice cuts but gosh I need to win the Powerball to afford any of it. I didn't have any coupons with me.

I did buy a pound of ground beef for $10 though. I guess I'll have some burgers tonight.
 
The cost of a burger tends to mirror the going rate for minimum wage. Fortunately I live in an area where there's no shortage of great burgers....some reasonable deals, some more expensive, but lots of options. It helps if they serve good beer too!

Bill Gray's (some locations have tap rooms), Tom Wahl's, Flaherty's Three Flags, New York Beer Project, Rohrbach's, Romig's, Clutch, Schaller's, Hose 22, Nolan's, Rising Storm Brewing, and many others. Not really fast food, but really good. $8-$19 range.

We are fortunate that we have both a good Burger King and McDonald's. We go to BK for the Wednesday deal on Whoppers once a month and I enjoy a quarter pounder occasionally at McDonald's, but the last one I had as a meal was $10.89, so no longer a good deal.

We spend a couple of months in France most years. The French have adopted the burger and they do it so much better than most places in the USA. A large hand-formed pattie cooked exactly the way you request, large, fat fries without any coating, lots of fresh veggies (as ordered) on the burger and generally a small salad on your plate, as well. The one at Bistro Le Sandra in Cannes in the pic has avocado, lettuce, tomato, pickle & onion and a bun made that morning.

We used to frequent and enjoy our local 5 Guys for around 12 yrs. until around 5 yrs. back and with the same order/type of burger, the quality became unacceptably degraded along with the jacked up price increase, so my B-I-L and I decided to boycott them and have my long suffering housekeeper/caregiver prepare ones for us instead, buying freshly ground ground 1lb. of chuck, or sirloin from the nearby Fresh Market with no pink slime mixed into the meat.

We get a 1/4 ~1/2 lb. burger with melted Tillamook brand sharp cheddar cheese, red onion, tomato, Romaine lettuce, sometimes sauteed mushrooms and of course, several slices of bacon draped over the patty as part of our desired build.

With either quality frozen fries, tater tots, or onion rings choice sides depending on our mood, as all three offerings are always kept available in the freezer, or sometimes Cape Cod brand kettle cooked regular flavored potato chips, if they happen to be BOGO priced.

With Nat. Hamburger day coming up later this month, I`m looking forward to the event, as I don`t eat red as often as I used to, and only have hamburgers on certain hamburger themed, or summer type holiday events over the yr.

Sadly, Dairy Queen used to offer what I thought was a very good quality "Brazier burger" decades back, but haven`t had one since the late seventies ~early eighties, and the nearest one is located ~ 8 miles away, if, in fact, still open .
