That just looks like a heart attack. Whats the point in the bun? Eat that with a knife and fork. Not my style of burger.

On a side note last night we made turkey burgers infused with bacon pieces. Cooked them on the grill. First time I have tried that. Ended up turning out pretty good.

Here in south Louisiana, I can get a poboy sandwich from my favorite sandwich shop that I have frequented since sneaking out of high school for lunch. They have a 9in roast beef poboy for $8.85. Real French bread and debris style roast beef. They have other sandwiches including fried shrimp, fried oysters, fried catfish, sausage, muffalettas etc. Top off with a Barq's root beer or cream soda in the large " bring back " bottle. All reasonably priced and the nostalgia is free.
For me this beats the best burger in town. Like most places, we have tons of restaurants that aren't fast food making excellent burgers for a few bucks more than fast food. I haven't seen Whataburger in NOLA, but they are all over the rest of the state. Prices are reasonable and service has always been excellent to me. Never had cold old French fries or a messed up order. They do go overboard with the mustard and onions sometimes though.

When Five Guys first opened in Massachusetts, I went with my daughter after seeing a review on TV. The burgers were fantastic as well as the fries (all the sacks of potatoes piled in the store to make aisles). Fresh legit food. The quality nose dived as quickly as the locations multiplied. Not worth the $$ today in my opinion.

The best counter service burger I've had in recent memory was at Naughty Patties in Las Vegas. A double patty smash burger with special sauce. Patties oversized for the potato roll with crispy edges to the beef. Not even that bad of a price especially considering the Strip location.

A new steak house opened in my town. Fine dining quality with a burger price not much higher than Five Guys. Looking forward to trying it. My wife wants to try the French Dip.

All that said, I mostly make burgers at home that are quite tasty. Brioche rolls from Costco (ingredient list is readable except for what's in the flour and no seed oil, just butter). The hamburg from my local store is preferably ground sirloin which cooks nicely - the 93% ground beef is very watery as it fries in the pan. I've actually cooked up 85% from other stores that cook "drier" than the 93%.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Shake Shack (or Smashburger).

In n' Out is best for value/quality/taste to me, but Shake Shake makes pretty decent burgers -- pricey, but quite good (as opposed to "very pricey but bland" Five Guys).

Smashburger is quite tasty -- but they must use a lot of grease because you don't feel good afterwards (it isn't that "your whole body has been marinated in preservatives" feeling I get post-McDonalds -- but more just a very heavy grease or some not very good oil). I remember taking my sons and his friends a few times to Smashburger -- and they wolfed them down and loved it, but didn't want to go back later (and these are kids that would eat McDonalds all day long at the time). Smashburger used to have a spicy baha avocado salad that was extremely good and seemed pretty healthy -- that was always my "go to" order over a burger -- but they removed that salad from the menu several years ago.

We make killer burgers at home -- my son is quite a chef and my wife makes fresh bread from scratch. Kind of hard to go out for a burger after eating like that at home. Meat-wise, Costco had some grass-fed organic ground beef for a while that was amazing (we bought a bunch and froze it). I don't remember the fat content, but everything we made with that (tacos, burgers) was amazing. Grass fed is better for you, reportedly, but usually doesn't taste nearly as good as grain fed -- not sure why that Costco version was so good. We haven't seen that particular ground beef sold there for a couple years though .
