Who else here runs vintage Technics speakers?

I have never heard of "SB-M10000" although I have heard of the SB-10000 and the SB-M1. I know of a guy that has both, (www.freewebs.com/mondaca/). As for me, I I've kind of gotten out of listening to music and more into home theater so, my speakers have changed jobs, so to speak. In our theater, I have almost all Technics speakers with a pair of SB-E100's up front, SB-7000A's for surround and another pair of SB-7000A's for surround back channel. For the subwoofer, I have a SST-35HZ and the lone center channel is a custom Rohrbaugh that just replaced my Jamo. I wish Technics had made a higher end center channel. If anyone knows of one, let me know.

For the rest of my Technics speakers, I also have a SB-10000, sorry, just one, a pair of SB-6060's, SB-5000's and a pair of SB-F3's. By the way, my SB-E100's replaced a pair of Klipsch La Scala's after an A/B comparison that was not very close.

A friend of mine just called to tell me that he picked up a pair of Technics SB-R200 speakers. These are thin speakers, 24 x 18 x 4 inches, with a 7" woofer and a 1.125" tweeter mounted coaxially. The Vintage Technics site has a picture, and they look really intriguing. My friend reports that the foams are shot, and he's a little reluctant to try refoaming them himself because of the unorthodox driver design. Does anyone at AK have experience with these, advice on refoaming them, a lead on parts for a DIY refoam job, or a recommendation of a tech who's familiar with them and could refoam them?

I have a pair of SB-T40's that I use as rear surrounds.

I have a pair of SB 501's I use in my shop- been using them for about 10 years. The cabs got destroyed so I re-cabbed them- they are two of my best sounding bookshelf speakers!

Bumping this thread for future technics owners. I have posted about this before, but this is also a proper place to post about these speakers: Mine are the SB-1000 that were the high end of Technics in 1973 and quite expensive at 220,000 yen in 1974, which is about US$6000+ 2012 dollars... each speaker (!!)

They seem to be rare on the internet. For one, people confuse this with the SB-tenthousand. Second, they weren't sold on the USA.

This speaker is like the SB-501 in concept, but taken to the extreme. Technics pulled out all stops. Basically is a 3 way speaker, but made with a cost-no-object, do-the-best-we-can, attitude.

Woofer is a 15Kg monster with three layer sandwich cone, double spider suspension (for a true pistonic motion) a huge magnet and a huge coil as well (100mm if i recall correctly). It has a vent in the back so the cone can move freely.

Midrange weights 5Kg, has an immense magnet, paper dome of the same three-layer composite, also has double spider suspension, and has a curious phase plug similar to the one in the SB-501 and other Technics speakers of that era, probably to improve dispersion.

Tweeter weights 1.5Kg and it's a titanium dome of 20um thickness. Also with that funny phase plug.

Crossover uses a huge laminated ferrite e-core inductor for the woofer, frequencies are 500Hz and 5000Hz (textbook design: one decade apart), each driver has a zobel so impedance is kept more controlled. According to Technics the crossover network will only show 0.1% of distortion at the maximum 100W RMS allowable input. It has separate terminals for each driver, which means it's ready for tri-amping. It also uses huge MP capacitors for the mid and tweeter. As i bought the unit, all the capacitors were kaput and changing them did a dramatic improvement to the sound.

Efficiency is high at at least 90dB for 2.8V all the way down to 50Hz... i'm currently using a 10W rms/channel Class-A amplifier, with good volume coming out.

Cabinet is a three-layer wood sandwich of about 4cm in width, it is really thick and rigid.

Each speaker weights 52Kg. I have mounted mine on sturdy wheels so i will not have to carry them anymore...

Probably this thing was designed to be matched with the Technics SE-10000 very-high-end (500,000 yen in 1973 -- which would make it over $12000 today) power amplifier and its matching preamp SU-10000, which was also ridiculously expensive.

So in 1973 Technics offerred the very best at...
360000 Yen -- a pair of SB-1000
450000 Yen -- SU-10000 control amp
500000 Yen -- SE-10000 power amp

total would be about 30,000 to 35,000 dollars. Wonder why this was never sold at the 'states.

Look at those distortion figures...

"TECHNICS HIGH TECHNICAL SERIES" ... any clue which other speaker had this marking?

I really want to run vintage technics but have yet to get a pair. Funnily enough my uncle wont sell me his SB-CD700 speakers and my nan still wants her floorstanders I forget what they are. However I may soon have some SB-X700 speakers if I am lucky. Here is hoping for some Honeycomb goodness.

Hope to join you all soon :)

I've heard of those and would like a set to mess with.

Not exactly vintage yet, but i have a pair of sb-k14's (bottom pair) and sb-k476's (top pair).
with the help of a fellow ak'er, i recapped the 14's. made a difference for sure.

Yesterday i heard a SB-501 for the first time and was positively impressed by the clarity of the sound. I would definitely recommend it. In fact, i am looking for a pair of SB-501 to complement my SB-1000s.

I'm about to buy a pair of sb-4000. Any idea on these? I hope they sound good because they're gonna my only speakers for now.
Currently I'm using a couple of F2 but one of them is half dead... pity

Well, they have a rather mundane cone tweeter so i wouldn't expect much. I saw a pair of them a year ago and didn't like them. But granted, i didn't listen to them either.

I use a pair of SB-X5 (SB-X50). Which I think sound great, especially because they only cost $20! Although I'd be very happy with them even if I had paid a lot more.

I have these;

SB-M5

SB-M300

SB-MX2

All in poor cosmetic condition but that doesn't bother me.

I've listened to the SB-M5 and SB-M300 side by side and there was no comparison so the SB-M300's might get used for HT in future, they have good bass for their size, but I'll need to fix up the looks first.

Now I'm using some old Trio's for HT duty but I'm going to compare those to the SB-M5's soon just to see what they really sound like.

One of the MX2's is doing centre channel HT duty while the other sits in the closet at this stage, I don't see them challenging the M5's in any way.
