Who says jazz is always better on lp?

The majority of my CD jazz collection is OJC titles. I grab 'em by the handful when I see them at the local used CD shop.

I also prefer the older Ron McMaster mastered Rudy Van Gelder recorded CDs to the newer, Rudy Van Gelder remastered CDs. I find the later RVG's a bit more trebly. That being said, the RVG series is still quite good and highlights some of RVG's best recordings. If you see "RVG," you know it is good.

Of course, "RVG" in the deadwax on vinyl is the true stamp of deep groove quality.

Right. If given a choice, I will usually go for the older versions or even the connoisseur editions in some cases. But, the RVG are cheap and not all bad.

I also buy the OJCs. More recently, Concord did a series called Keephews editions of old Riverside or Milestone releases. Some of those cds are fantastic. Other great cd reissues include a lot of the old Atlantic catalog remastered by Gene Paul. The Impulse! reissues remastered by Eric Labson are generally very good, I have a lot of these and they generally sound better than anything on lp, except of course for a clean original pressing. Old Verve releases by Dennis Drake are also very good, again I have tried lps of various vintages from the Verve catalog and the cds have, in my experience, sounded better than most of the lps available at real world prices. Most of the 90s era Sony reissues from the old Columbia jazz catalog are also quite good, though a few are bright, and a little harsh.

I also seek out more contemporary jazz releases from the major labels, as well as audiophile releases from ECM, Antilles, Chesky, Mapleshade and Telarc.
As a rule, I don't have a problem with the sound quality of contemporary jazz recordings.
