Who stole the Dynamics?

Something else to check out is this critter. It's a "phantom fundemental" processor. It takes the bass fundementals out of the signal and does a little manipulation on the harmonics and fools your brain into thinking the fundemental is still there. It's nice for apartment types because you don't get the true bass that goes throughfloors and walls but it still sounds like there's bass when you're in the room. It won't thump your chest much because the frequencies that really do that aren't present but it does sound pretty good. I checked it out at a job a few years ago and it really works.

Might be worth a look.

Wow.
VERY cool technology.
I think if I could pressurize the room with a big enough driver, the lack of the really low bass would not be an issue, right? Or am I off base here (bad pun).

How about a nice 3-way system? Highs and lows can actually sound better when they're not pulling extra duty in the music's midsection...

Dahlquist DQ-12.

Magnat 6P II,

Magnat 10P (AKA Dahlquist DQM-9c)

OTOH consider going with larger cabs, not shrinking Bose cube wannabee's. (unless you're able to bend the laws of physics.)

Well if you simply must have small cabs and 2-way, for dynamics the best I've ever had were these: Ohm Cam/Pro-16
Heavy as lead, sealed cabs, pivotable 'egg' tweeter.

MUCH truth to that tho.
Right now running an older CJ pre-amp, which is certainly on the warm and smooth side. As mentioned, so is the Sota and Zyx combo.

Tried them with both the CJ and with my old backup, the Carver 1.0t. Not that the Carver is the most dynamic of SS amps, but it should do something.

To be honest, I think the Operas are going deep enough. They are just not moving enough air. Maybe I need something with a 10 inch woofer with a f3 or 50hz or so????

Same here, believe me, those Fostex drivers are capable of going very deep, and the bass can be quite powerful - but then again, Eric Alexander (Tekton) purposely built over-sized cabinets and an over-sized port to achieve that kind of bass.

What we do know, or at least I would assume, is that your turntable/cartridge combination is not part of the problem.

How about some 8 inch woofer realistics? my MC-1200 realistics can pack a punch and they're not very high powered speakers either.

Get you some fullrangers.

I have thought of that. Major issue is that she who must be obeyed is incredibly sensitive to any hardness or harshness in the highs, and I have yet to hear any fullrangers that have both extended highs and smooth ones....

Even on my older pair of Boston acoustics CR8's, that song kicks pretty hard. It could be a compromised pressing. If the system is dynamically challenged, higher efficiency loudspeakers should help.

I have a phase Linear "dynamic recovery system" and about 5K worth of computer goodies that can restore the dynamics (to a point) for many of the newer pressings which are limited and compressed.

True again Erik, I was just talking about this the other day. I feel like they (my full range speakers) have what I've seen referred to as "shout," and sometimes it's a bit much in the highs. Actually I just put up a couple room treatment panels tonight in the hopes of taming that a bit, but I won't be able to do any serious listening right now.

The pressing I have is I believe the original UA American pressing. UA-LA546G. Not in bad shape either.

Sounds like some fun toys there...

Bill has actually done an awesome job in making his big Altecs sound both dynamic and smooth. Awesome job, actually. Fabulous sounding speakers, and I am sure the SE tube gear helps too.
But these have been to me, the exception, not the rule.

Ahhhh yes. . . the old model 1000 Autocorrelator. Using the 'peak unlimiter' knob for dynamic recovery.

I remember it well.

Just a thought here, but have you thought about equalization at all? The speakers may be sounding un-dynamic because of the amount of bass that is being amplified and reproduced, or attempted to be reproduced. You could try rolling off below 50 or 60 and see if anything improves.

Nothing to equalize with. I don't even have a tone control anywhere in the system. Not a loudness button. Nothin!

Erik,

If you want to listen to some Adire Audio HE10.1s, we can probably arrange for you to get them to try out. A bit more dynamic than any of the 8" full range options with a bit more bass. The can use a little room reinforcement for the bass but sound pretty decent.

I will see if I can loacate that DAT tape and roll it to the computer, get you a copy to compare. It will take me a few days, pretty solid work schedule right now. :) (Got to look through a few hundred DAT's)

Dave, you finally got them going? Cool.

Erik, if you like those 10.1's I know the guy that Dave got his drivers from and he's got one more set in storage. ;)

Hmm.
Sounds like fun! :)

Oh yeah?
Sounds good. But Dave said that guy was a real asshole to deal with.... :D
