Why are CD Players so uninteresting?

You can get remotes for them, I've picked up a few of those too. I don't know what functions you get though. One of these days I'm going to tear into one.
According to Marantz, turning off the display keeps it from possibly negatively interfering with the audio output.

Some real beauties in this thread. 
I have a boring but effective Sony CDP-C350Z changer that came mated with my Sony AV receiver. It does have some nice LCD displays, but I like the minimalist black, actually.
NAD did that look quite well IMO, I just can't justify the expense though.
I also have a nice LG GH24NS90 DVD/CD Writer on my computer that can even write "M-Disc" media.
But, I rarely use them because physical media is all but dead when it comes to digital, IMHO.
I have do CD/DVD drives mainly for PC physical install media, burning discs and playing the occasional old CD, like that Sony changer. Hell, I have a Pioneer 1X 5-disc SCSI changer from the 1990s that powered a BBS once.
But, to be honest, it is far easier to rip CD's to FLAC/320K, fire up my Daum media player and listen through my ancient Altec Lansing ACS-45 2.1 computer speakers. Those old tanks still rock.
How many FLAC/320k songs and albums fit on a CD versus a flash drive or hard drive? Not to mention the ubiquity of the game console and HTPC. I also have a 1/8" stereo-to-RCA cable so most anything on PC can be played on the stereo system if I wish.
CDPs aren't uninteresting, they've just become extinct as tech marches on.

I confess that my tastes tend towards a high quality instrumentation look as you find with my Audio Research gear that some might find boring. As for gorgeous, however, my favorites are made by Burmester. A reviewer friend had the 969 DAC/970 transport combo in his system many years ago. Pictures simply don't do the polished panels justice. The units exude the look of quality with the recessed allen head machine screws and precision aluminum panels.

I agree. Why not get a CD player that can also rip in most any format, store 4TB of Flac files, has a great DAC, has DSD/DXD capability, a nice graphical display, can stream IP or FM, and has analog inputs for burning tapes or vinyl? That's the direction I went...forward rather than backwards; modern utilitarian rather than poser sexy (though it ain't that hard on the eyes). I haven't been bored by it yet.:

The Sony CDP-X5000, the high end brother to the CDP-X3000, is pretty sexy in a minimalist kind of way. The caveat is that like the X3000 they were never sold in the U.S. market and run on 220v which makes them hard to find and expensive if you get lucky. I got lucky although mine wasn't inexpensive by any measure and I have to use a step-up transformer, but it is a beautiful and great sounding little fixed laser top loading player. Neither the X5000 or X3000 are officially part of the ES series of players.

I had heard of the chubby-looking NovaFidelity X12 awhile back, but that there would fit in my rack nicely.

Seriously... it's kind of hard to get all worked up or excited about digital anything. Not that there is anything wrong with digital. I have 600+ CDs and I like them all. But digital is just digital, nothing to get excited about, and likewise for the sound quality. Digital is like a big 'So What'. But some CDs do sound outstanding.
CD Players: Guess it's all about how the CD player functions and sounds. If it functions perfect and sounds great... great enough. It works. What more do you want out of a CD player?

the X40 (sold as CocktailAudio in the US) has no amp so is sleeker and fits in racks nicely. Though part of my 2-ch system, I also linked mine up to Sonos on my Control4 rack so I could also access it's internal library through my whole house system. So much more versatile than my previous CD player (a Dragon that I sold for about the same price)Daddy Like!

Well I might as well throw the Sony DVP9000es into this thread. It's the only CD player I've had that I can say made a noticeable sound improvement over all the other players I've had.
It looks great, sounds great, and is a beast of a player at about thirty lbs. The remote is huge with a back lighted buttons. The build quality is excellent, right down to its copper clad chassis. The controls on the front are capacitance touch which is quite nice as well. The display auto dims as well when playing.
