Why Capitalize Every First Letter?

A perhaps unavoidable result of having self respect and an obsolete sense of manners and civility. In other words, to prarphrase Wilde, I'm always know when I'm being a jag-off.
It's possible to disregard your rules and traditions and still be a self-respecting and respectable member of society. You're not exactly making the world a better place yourself by being stuck in the last century and bitching so much about it.

Referring to a vinyl record or records as a 'vinyl' or 'vinyls' is no different than calling an LP record an 'LP', or (gasp) using the plural LP's.

It may not feel familiar to you, but it is just as acceptable.

I think (hope) that you just have a problem with the type of person who might currently use this terminology.

I understand what you are saying here. However, despite the fact that information can be communicated in more than one way, some ways of communicating require the reader to 'work' to obtain the meaning intended.

When done through laziness on the part of the person 'speaking', it is rude. When done intentionally, to annoy, it's being an asshole.
But these are simply your interpretations. You're assuming motivation on the writer's part. I could post a one-link response to a question and feel really great about being able to help the guy out. The fact you (or anyone) might see that as rude has nothing to do with me or my motivations. I could have been successful in happily offering help to someone who was grateful to have it. And you'd be over there suffering.

An example of the former is when a person answers a question with nothing more than a link to a webpage where the information requested is located, if someone takes the time to read the entire thing and understands it. Rather than communicate the asked-for information, the lazy response is simply a vague shrug in the right direction. Is the information there? Yes. It is a pain in the ass for the person asking the question to dig it out? Might very well be. So it's kind of rude, but it still provides the asked-for information, in a way.

An example of the latter is the person who only types in all caps, despite repeated requests to not do it. Their information is still just as valid - or invalid - in all caps as it is when typed correctly. But it is most definitely annoying to read, and since it is done for the purpose of annoying the reader, the person who does it is an asshole. Regardless of the fact that the information presented might be valid.

What if a stranger asks a photographer on the street to not take a close up photograph of their child and the photographer does it anyways. Is the photographer being an asshole?

Any have a Rule 34 example of capitalization? This thread needs boobs.

We're up to our ears in boobs here ...

Oh ... you mean

(never mind)

Whether or not you think I'm contributing to society means nothing.

I don't doubt that you and I have different ideas of what makes the world a better place. I take a longer view than worrying about what century certain behavior is supposedly appropriate for.

It is done to be obnoxious, not because of honest error, in my opinion.

"Gay" used to be only an adjective, yet now "gays", or being a "gay" is commonplace and acceptable. Just like "vinyl".

Nothing obnoxious about that, unless you make it that way.

Now go have some supper.

If I am having a discussion with a person and I ask them a question, but instead of answering, they hand me a book, that's lazy - and rude. Yes, the answer might well be in that book. But the implication is that they can't be arsed to tell me the answer - even though they know it - but would rather I find it myself. They may indeed feel they've done me a service, but in the course of normal discussion, that's not how polite people ask.

As to my assertion that someone typing in all caps after being asked repeatedly not to is being an asshole; well, assuming that the person is capable of understanding the request and simply refused; yes, they're being an asshole. That would be my opinion. And that of most people, I would presume.

You were told that your neighbors were deathly afraid of dogs, yet you let yours out to run up to a row of shrubs and chicken wire (hardly a safe barrier) and bark and/or otherwise intimidate them.

Where does that anatomically place you?:scratch2:
